Review: LUNA Protein Chocolate Coconut Almond Bar

LUNA bar, where art thou?  It has been since October 2013 since we have met, so I was starting to miss you.  Okay, maybe I wasn't missing LUNA, but it was nice to see that they introduced a new product that I was able to gather via a free sample.  That free sample of this LUNA Protein Chocolate Coconut Almond Bar was delivered to my mailbox and my first thought was, "haven't I reviewed this before?"  Suffice it to say, nothing about this bar seemed "NEW" to me at all.  After a careful examination of my review archive, I did find out that this bar was in fact new and therefore deserving of a review.  So, this free sample bar clocks in at 1.59 ounces with 180 calories and twelve grams of protein.

Looking at this isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world.  It's a log-shaped bar enrobed in chocolate.  Within that chocolate coating is a protein mix that is somewhat similar to peanut butter, although since this bar has almonds, you could say that it is almond butter.  Within that "butter" mix is a scattering of small ground up almonds and some soy crisps, in addition to what I'd assume would be some coconut shards that I just couldn't find.  While I couldn't find any coconut shards, I certainly could smell them as this bar has a nice smell of coconut that was quite enjoyable for a now devout coconut fan like myself.  So, that's about it.  As the police can sometimes say, "nothing to see here."

As I took my first bite, I was happily able to get a couple of those almond bits in my bite, so that added an occasional pop to each chew of this very chewy bar.  What was nice about this bar was that pleasing coconut smell translated into the actual flavor as well as that coconut, while strong, was very pleasing and lingered in my mouth for quite a while.  I liked that.  The chocolate, while melting and providing a nice coating on the bar, did not provide a lot of chocolate flavor.  It did bring some additional sweetness to the entire package, but nothing about it screamed cocoa/chocolate and that was fine.  The interior mix of coconut was pleasing enough that it didn't need the extra help from chocolate flavor.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This bar was pleasing all around, so it gets a BUY IT rating from me.  I wouldn't go so far as to say that this is a great bar, but the more I ate of it, the more I enjoyed it.  It is an above average bar and if you are a woman looking for some protein, they this is definitely a viable option.  If you are a man, you can eat it too, but don't eat too much because I was told in a comment on a LUNA post once that men shouldn't eat too much of these since the bars are formulated for women's health. Oops.  Maybe I shouldn't have reviewed so many (I'm kidding)!

BUY IT!!

  2. I haven't tried the protein version of Luna yet, just the regular ones, which didn't impress me. However, I'm gathering ratings from other people who tried the Luna Protein bar. Would be awesome if you could leave your rating on my site.

    Thanks
    Daniel
