Review: PureFit Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Premium Nutrition Bar

My wonderful Marsh Supermarket and its expanded nutrition section brings another new manufacturer to the blog in today's review.  In that expanded and well-stocked section, I was able to pick up this PureFit Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Premium Nutrition Bar on sale for $2.59.  Each bar is 2.0 ounces and has 230 calories and eighteen grams of protein.  The wrapper also reads like a "who's, who" of health-targeted components in that this bar is all natural, dairy free, gluten free, kosher and vegan.  I'm sure there's some others thrown in there too, but just having those aspects is like the holy grail of health in my opinion.

It's quite obvious when you take this out of the wrapper that it's trying really hard for that cookie dough motif.  After I took it out and noticed that, I took another glance at the wrapper and noticed that PureFit had slyly placed a line after the name of the bar on the label that read "(tastes like cookie dough)" so it's clear that the appearance was not an accident.  As for that cookie dough appearance, it had a somewhat odd outer sheen to it and it was quite sticky.  Now, despite that, it did smell strongly of peanut butter and faintly like I'd expect a tube of cookie dough to smell.  Within that soft and pliable so-called cookie dough mix were a smattering of semi-sweet chocolate chips and some soy crisps.  So, from an appearance perspective, I'd say they did a pretty good job making this bar (look like cookie dough).

Biting into this, it came as no surprise to me that this was soft and chewy like a roll of doughy cookie dough.  It also had a strong, hearty and dense peanut butter flavor that while lacking in sweetness, more than made up for that with its peanut butter flavor.  It also had a slight hint of vanilla to it too, so that made the cookie dough motif seem even more appropriate.  What was lacking here was a strong chocolate flavor.  Sure, the chocolate had some flavor, but being that the chips were semi-sweet, it really came as no big surprise that they weren't particularly sweet.  The good news was that the chips did melt over the "dough" and provided a somewhat decadent mouthfeel to this bar that was supplemented by a somewhat airy crunch by the occasional soy crisp.  In the end, the most surprising thing about this bar was the how the sea salt announced its authority at the end of each bite.  I definitely was not expecting that and quite honestly, I wasn't a huge fan.  It wasn't enough to turn me off of the bar, but if I could pull out one component here, it would be the sea salt.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Not an award winner in my book, but definitely a more than solid performer that earns a BUY IT rating.  Like I mentioned previously, it could have used a little more sweetness from the chocolate chips and a little less saltiness, but in the end, I really did enjoy this bar and while it was certainly a sizable bar, I was left wanting more at the end because the flavor was enough to leave me desiring more of it.  That is always a good sign.

BUY IT!!
