Review: Elisabeth Hasselbeck's NoGii Nuts About Tropical Fruit No Gluten Paleo Bar

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is quite the polarizing character.  Survivor, The View, etc.  It would only be natural that someone that polarizing would make a nutrition bar, right?  Okay, maybe that isn't the case.  However you feel about her, I was at least interested to try out another product, no matter who was associated with it and that led me to make this purchase of an Elisabeth Hasselbeck's NoGii Nuts About Tropical Fruit No Gluten Paleo Bar that I picked up at Marsh for $2.29.  The bar itself is 1.5 ounces and consists of 190 calories and four grams of protein.  It's also gluten free, so it's got another tick in the health column in addition to being paleo (natural).

Being that this is a Paleo bar, it should come as no surprise at all that this is a very basic looking bar.  What is surprising is the amount of ingredients they've got compacted into such a tiny 1.5 ounce bar.  It's got nuts, which include almonds and cashews (hard and butter form).  It's got fruit, which includes dates, coconut, apples, bananas, pineapples and mangoes.  It's also got seeds, which includes sesame and sunflower seeds.  It's all tightly compacted in a bar (along with oats) like you see above that is bound together with honey and butters.  In terms of smell...well, all I can say is that it smelled like a whole lot of nothing.

Biting into this didn't provide me a ton of flavor either.  It was just a few burst of mild flavor here and there mixed with some crunch from the nuts, which had surprising size to them and provided more crunch than I would have expected.  The bar itself was chewy and the nuts breaking that up was nice, but the flavor was just a hit of tang (more mango than pineapple) and then an aftertaste of banana that lingered with another hint of pineapple.  Being that I'm not a banana person, I can't say that I liked the banana aftertaste much, but it was so mild that it wasn't too bothersome.  That said, that mildness was the problem with this bar.  It was just bland and boring.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Bland and boring usually leads to a negative decision and that's the case here, so I'll give it a FLY BY IT rating.  What I find comical about this bar is that for someone so polarizing, it's sort of amusing that one of her namesake bars would be so basic and right down the middle.  Okay, maybe that's just something amuses me.  Either way, this might be the kind of bar that some people enjoy, but it just wasn't for me.

FLY BY IT!!
