I touched on these "crazy" Nutri-Grain new products in my last review of these Harvest bars where they basically take their typical Nutri-Grain bar, turn it inside-out and then make it more "Earthy" by sprinkling some grains on the top of the bar. Still, I like reviewing new products (and making money), so that leads me to today's review of this Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Fruit & Oat Harvest Country Strawberry Bars. I picked up a box of five of these at Meijer for $3.00 on sale. Each bar in the box weighs in at 1.76 ounces and has 180 calories with four grams of protein.
The box claims these are "Hearty" bars and they are definitely that as they have quite some girth to them. They are constructed as a heavily grainy base with a topping of a strawberry jam on top of that. On top of the jam are some dried oat pieces. The bar smelled mildly of strawberry and that was a pleasing smell. Outside of that, I don't know that I have much else to say here since this was pretty basic construction of a bar.
As I took a bite of this, it was very similar to my last experience. The bar was a bit more solid than I would have expected, but once I got past that it was a grainy and dry chew. The flavor of the bar was quite grainy as well. Fortunately, this had the strawberry "jam" on top of the bar to add flavor and also some moisture that made this a lot easier for me to make my way through. That strawberry jam was mildly sweet and just like the smell, just flavorful enough to be pleasing. The final component was the dried oat pieces on top and all they really did was add more graininess to the entire package.
Buy It or Fly By It? Quite honestly, this bar is nothing to write home about. But, it is something to write a blog post about, I suppose. That absurdity aside, I give this a BUY IT rating. This bar is certainly not a game changer, but it is a tasty enough bar that it would provide for an excellent snack or a very small meal on the go.
