Review: Talenti Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Pops

I'm late to the party on this one, but several months ago, Talenti went outside their normal pint of gelato arena and introduced a line of gelato pops to the market.  I've hit on the pints several times before, but this is my first venture into the pop world with this review of these Talenti Sea Salt Caramel Gelato Pops that I picked up on sale at Kroger for $3.00.  Each box of these contains three individually wrapped pops that each come in at a weight of 3.0 fluid ounces and contain 170 calories.

Being that a lot of dessert pops are the same, it should come as no surprise that this one basically looks like a typical frozen dessert pop with a tailored recipe.  In the case of this pop, it's got a hard outer shell of strongly smelling dark chocolate and honestly, the smell of the dark chocolate reminded me of why I don't like dark chocolate in that it was slightly foul (again, according to my preferences).  The interior of the bar was the standard sea salt caramel gelato that I've reviewed the pint version of before and it smelled just like it is named.  The smell of the caramel and the salt was strong and there was nothing about the smell of the gelato or the chocolate itself that reminded me of anything sweet and I was not exactly excited about that going in.

After I took my first bite (that led to the photo above), my first observation was that the outer dark chocolate shell snapped like chocolate exterior shells often do.  As for the flavor, all I can say is that it was definitely dark chocolate and that dark chocolate flavor was flat and while not quite fully bitter, it was definitely headed down that path.  As for the sea salt caramel gelato, it tasted just like I expected it to.  More of a burnt caramel flavor with a strong presence of sea salt, which makes it interestingly taste dry and not at all like a creamy gelato.  Honestly, between the dark chocolate and the sea salt caramel gelato, there was not any sweetness in this at all.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I prefer my dessert foods to be sweet and this one definitely did not have that.  I can deal with saltiness in a dessert as long as there is a sweet component to offset that an that component was nowhere to be found in this pop, so it gets a FLY BY IT rating.  Had the dark chocolate been a sweet chocolate instead, I may have a different opinion, but since this was dark chocolate in all its evilness (again, my personal opinion), I did not particularly enjoy this at all which is sad because I do enjoy most Talenti products that I consume and this first venture into their gelato pops line was not a good one.

BUY IT!!

  1. Too bad the pops weren't as good as they sounded :(

On another note, I've spotted another one of your ice cream images on the web… this time it's on Magnum's official Facebook page. I assume you submitted it, unless the company is using your image without permission. Go to Facebook.com/MagnumUS, scroll down to November 12, and you'll see your ice cream image for the Magnum mint bar.

    1. I did not give them permission to use it, so I just left a comment. Funny that the "borrowing" of my images is becoming so prevalent. I guess I should view it as flattering that people are reading, I suppose.

      Thanks for letting me know!
