For some odd reason, my Kroger keeps the nutrition bars in two separate areas of the store. They keep the mainstream bars like CLIF, KIND, etc. near the actual food and then they keep some of the hardcore bars in the pharmacy. I'm not sure why they do that, but on the rare occasion that I do patrol the pharmacy, I always manage to see a couple of new bars on each visit. That's certainly the case with this Premier Protein Crisp Chocolate Mint Crunchy Protein Bar that I was able to pick up on sale for $1.33. Each bar is 1.83 ounces and 190 calories with fifteen grams of protein. Interestingly, despite the fact that this bar appears entirely manufactured, it is gluten free which seems kind of out of place all things considered. Perhaps it's just me that feels that way though since I'm a little goofy.
So, as you can see, there's not a whole lot to look at here. It's a chocolate bar with a chocolate soy crisp interior. Despite the fact that there's not a whole lot to look at, there is a whole lot to smell as I was immediately hit with the smell of mint once I opened the wrapper and it was quite potent. It was the equivalent of a piece of Andes candy and as someone who has eaten many of those off of the pillows of hotels, I was a big fan.
After biting into this, the flavor was pretty much exactly an Andes candy as well. The texture was different, of course, but the flavor was the same. What was funny about this bar to me is that the name includes both crisp and crunchy in the title and honestly, this bar did have both of those characteristics, which seems counter intuitive to me. Regardless, it did happen and that was kind of fun. In terms of the flavor, the mint definitely won out and the chocolate was more of just a coating as opposed to a flavor as the "fresh" mint flavor took this entire bar over. While strong, it wasn't overly strong...just like the candy. It was a more than pleasing flavor power and I appreciated that.
Buy It or Fly By It? I was absolutely surprised that after eating this that I didn't hate it and in fact, I actually liked it and give it a BUY IT rating. While it obviously lacked the softness and creaminess of the actual candy due to the fact that this was a bar, it pretty much nailed the flavor in a very good way and if you see this in the aisle at your store, whether that aisle is in the pharmacy or the food area, I would think it would be a good pick up.
