Review: LUNA Toasted Nuts 'n Cranberry Bar

I've lamented on many occasions how rare it is for me to find a flavor of nutrition bar in my regular grocery haunts that I haven't tried before and it's becoming frustrating in terms of generating new content for the blog.  Every now and then though, a new flavor will sneak up on me and that is the case for this  LUNA Toasted Nuts 'n Cranberry Bar that I picked up on sale at Kroger for $1.00.  Like the others I've reviewed, this bar is technically designed for women, but I think it's okay if I try one out.  Would you agree?  Anyway, the bar itself is 1.7 ounces and has 170 calories and nine grams of protein.

As you can see from the outward appearance of this, it has the look of a traditional nutritional granola bar.  Within the mix of the bar are several large cashews, some almonds and also a healthy spreading of pumpkin seeds.  All of those are toasted, thus the name.  Also spread sporadically throughout the extremely stick bar are a plenitude of large dried cranberries, so the named ingredients are present and accounted for.  Like I said, this looks like a pretty standard nutritional granola bar, so outside of that, there's nothing left to do but try this one out.

When I took my first bite, I was immediately struck by how chewy this was.  I expected a little bit of snap to it, but there really wasn't any to be had.  After that initial observation, my next taste was of cashews and frankly it was quite a powerful taste.  Typically, I just expect cashews to provide crunch and then just a little bit of flavor.  In the case of this bar, the cashews not only provided the occasional crunch (as did the almonds), but they also provided a ton of nutty cashew flavor, which was nice.  There was also a cashew butter type taste too, which I also appreciated as it mixed well with the chewy bar.  After my first couple initial bites, I was beginning to wonder what happened to the cranberries, but right as I started to think that, the cranberry flavor announced itself with authority and strong tanginess.  Now, don't get me wrong when I say it was strong.  It was strong, but not so strong that it made it inedible.  It was strong enough to make itself noticeable, but it was also quite tasty and did a good job balancing out with the nutty flavor.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Thinking back as I type this review, the combination of nutty flavor and fruity tang kind of reminds me of a trail mix.  I'm addicted to trail mix, so anything that reminds me of that gives me positive thought and that means that this bar gets a BUY IT rating.  I would recommend this to anyone, man or woman, if you are looking for something that is both nutty, fruity and simple all at the same time.

BUY IT!!
