Review: Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bars

I can say with a reasonable sense of certainty that up until I bought a trio of Haagen-Dazs ice cream bars in a recent super sale at Meijer that I've never had one of their ice cream bars in my life.  Heaven knows I've had plenty of their ice creams that I've reviewed, but I've never gone down to the ice cream bar products.  So, today's review of this three bar box of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bars that I picked up for $3.00 is a first for me.  Lucky you!  Each bar is 3.0 fluid ounces and is a belly-busting 310 calories, so as per the typical Haagen-Dazs motif, this is super premium and very calorie dense.

The name of this product pretty much describes what it entails, although I'll touch on a description briefly.  It's a surprisingly dense and heavy bar consisting of a vanilla ice cream base that has swirls of peanut butter woven throughout.  As you can see by comparing my picture to the box, the peanut butter swirls are decidedly more thin in real life compared to the box.  The bar is then encased in a thick layer of milk chocolate that also has some peanuts mixed in to provide a very nutty package for consumption.  It smelled greatly of peanuts and chocolate, so I knew based on smell alone, I certainly wouldn't be cheated.

And cheated I was not, which isn't surprising.  The peanut butter taste was strong, but somewhat muted by the sweet vanilla and exceptionally rich milk chocolate.  Exceptionally rich milk chocolate flavor is nothing new for Haagen-Dazs, so I kind of expected that coming.  That milk chocolate shell also brought some initial snap to each bite and then it quickly melted to provide a dense coating to the vanilla ice cream and peanut butter swirl.  The crunch in the bar came from the inclusion of the chopped up peanuts and it was what I would consider to be necessary as once the chocolate melted, the primary components of this bar kind of just all melted together to form a sweet tasting chocolatey and peanut buttery sludge in my mouth.  I know that sounds unappetizing as I describe it, but trust me the flavor was not unappetizing at all.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This ice cream bar delivered pretty much as I would have expected.  It wasn't sensational and it wasn't awful...it was just a solid flavor that delivered, so I give these bars a BUY IT rating.  If you are looking for a decadent treat combining three quality flavors, picking up a box of these big ol' bars would definitely be a solid, but not spectacular, decision.

BUY IT!!
