While recently perusing my favorite food-related blogs, I happened upon a post on The Impulsive Buy showing that Kellogg's had released even more products from its pastry crisps line. I've already hammered on a lot of these and after looking for quite some time to find them in stores, I was finally able to find a box of these Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Caramel Pastry Crisps on sale at Marsh for $2.99. Each box has five pouches of crisps and each pouch has two crisps and comes in at 0.88 ounces with 100 calories and an almost comical one gram of protein.
Being that these are part of the pastry crisps line, their general construction is the same as the others in that they are light, airy and have aeration holes on the top of the bar. Outside of that though, this one veers way off from the others that I've taken a look at in that this time is the first time that the pastry portion of each of these crisps has been chocolate. I'm surprised it took so long to put one out that had a chocolate flavored crisp, but it was only a matter of time I guess. That chocolate crisp was definitely strong smelling and actually smelled a lot like the chocolate wafer of an Oreo cookie. The bar was then filled with caramel filling, which while present, was only there in a thin amount due to the thinness and overall construction of these products. The bar was then topped with a decorative chocolate swirl, so true to the name, this one was definitely chocolatey.
The flavor was definitely chocolatey too because frankly, that's all that I tasted. There was no caramel flavor at all or if there was, it definitely got lost in the chocolate flavor of the wafer and swirl. Now, I could definitely tell the caramel was there because each bite included an oozing and gooey quality that was brought on by that filling. Unfortunately, outside of it's mouthfeel, I really couldn't tell it was there. As for the chocolate wafer, my earlier comparison to an Oreo cookie holds strong here as that's pretty much exactly the flavor it had. It wasn't nearly as crunchy as an Oreo as it was soft and airy, but it definitely tasted like one. The swirl on the top of the crisp added a little additional chocolate sweetness and melty characteristics as well as it topped each bite of the wafer.
Buy It or Fly By It? While the caramel was a virtual no-show in the flavor department, this pastry crisp pouch was all amount chocolate (thus the name) and it succeeded in that respect. Being that I, like a lot of people, am a chocolate lover, I very much appreciated that and give this a BUY IT rating. I wish the caramel would have had more of a presence, but I'm more than fine with the way this turned out and am certainly pleased with my purchase, especially since these crisps carry such a low calorie load in the grand scheme of snacks.
