Review: Chobani Pear 0% Greek Yogurt

As I've read in my several business and financial magazines that I read, business is booming at Chobani as they are one of the first companies to take advantage of the Greek yogurt craze.  As a way to differentiate themselves, they've introduced several new products in order to expand their profile.  Still, it's sometimes helpful to remember the products that brought you to the dance and today's review of this Chobani Pear 0% Greek Yogurt is one of those products.  I've stayed away from this flavor on the blog for some reason, but today is as good of a day as any to round out some of those core flavors (I'll be hitting on another later). I got this 6.0 ounces cup at Meijer on sale for $1.00 and each cup is 130 calories, has fourteen grams of protein and is made with all natural ingredients.

As you can see in the introductory picture, this one is constructed as having the fruit on the bottom and I've stirred some of those pears to the top in the picture above.  What you can see is several small chunks of faintly colored pears that actually look kind of sad.  I guess that's what happens when you don't inject your fruit with chemicals and dyes to make them look more vibrant.  It's kind of depressing to look at, but in the grand scheme of things in the long run, it's actually better for anyone eating this.  The yogurt itself had a slight smell of pear and was especially thick, which seems to be par for the course with Chobani's standard flavors.

When I first tested the yogurt only, I was surprised.  Ordinarily, I would have just expected plain and tart Greek yogurt.  Instead, I got a yogurt that was tart as expected, but also carried quite a hit of pear flavoring.  I did not expect that and honestly, I didn't really like it.  Something about the pear flavor was just off and seemed almost banana-like to me.  Being that I'm an ardent hater of bananas, I really did not appreciate that.  As for the fruit on the bottom, it did have pear taste, but it wasn't particularly sweet like a fresh pear.  The flavor was just blah, for lack of a better way of describing it.  When mixed with the actual pear-tasting yogurt itself, the fruit's taste actually got lost, although the little chunks of pear did provide a nice textural contrast to the thick Greek yogurt.  Outside of that though, they really did nothing for this cup or me.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I was incredibly underwhelmed by this cup and for that, I give it a FLY BY IT rating.  This may be one of Chobani's core flavors, but it's just not one that I liked.  Others may find this one to be an enjoyable flavor, but this just wasn't for me.  Too bland and what flavor there was seemed off.  Also, I've never been a big fan of pears in my life, so this did nothing to change that opinion for me.  All in all, not a good recipe for success in my book.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. Hi IndianapolisEater. I was searching for reviews on the Pear Chobani and your blog popped up first. I just opened my first chobani Pear and it did not have any fruit on the bottom. Was your pear yogurt consistency kind of "liquid-y"? My yogurt tastes really sour, too, and it's not beyong its expiry date yet. I will write to Chobani but thought I should educate myself first from someone who has tasted the Yogurt. Hoping to get a response, thanks! :-)

    1. Mine did have fruit on the bottom (as the container indicated), so it looks like you got a defective one. Yikes. I would definitely contact Chobani and let them know. They are usually very responsive, so I'm sure you'll get a response, if not also a replacement product.

  2. Thanks for the response! I'm not impressed with the Yogurt but I shall hopefully be impressed with their customer service!

  3. This is my all-time favorite yogurt, and I am having trouble finding it, no doubt because of negative reviews such as the one above. This is not a mainstream flavor for yogurt and the best part about it is that it doesn't have that artificially sweet taste that most flavored yogurts have. I'm sure it will disappear just like Snapple's Kiwi Pear diet drink. I just think Americans don't have the taste buds for pear-flavored foods.

  4. So sad - I loved the Chobani Pear yogurt. I searched all over town to get more, and even went on-line to order it if I could, and of course its unavailable. It is so not fair to have reviews on a pear product from people who don't like pear. Mebbe state that from the beginning of the review - i wouldn't waste my time reading a review about a burger from a vegetarian who forced themselves to eat it. I love pear, this was the ONLY pear flavored yogurt I have ever found, and Chobani did a decent job with it. Big loss in my fridge.

  5. I loved the pear flavor too and I'm so sad that I can't find it. I've started buying more of other brands so hopefully one of them will develop a good pear yogurt.
