It has been a while since I've taken a look at a Turkey Hill product. I guess it's because their recent limited edition flavors haven't really piqued my curiosity much. One thing that has piqued my curiosity but I have been late in getting to a review is their introduction of their All Natural line of ice creams which has happened within the past few months. This ice cream is All Natural because, well, it uses all natural ingredients and it also uses a limited number of ingredients. Once I've finally gotten off my rear and stopped being lazy (I will admit have a $1.00 off coupon kind of "coached" me to it), I grapped a 1.5 quart container of this Turkey Hill All Natural Salted Caramel Ice Cream at Kroger on sale for $3.99. Each container has twelve half-cup sized servings and each serving is an economical 160 calories. Before I go into the review, I have a bit of an aside about Turkey Hill...while some of their flavors are misses, they have a good catalog of flavors overall. Also, once thing I very much appreciate is that they keep their calorie counts down to reasonable levels and if you devour ice cream in a moronic fashion like I do, that is a good thing.
As you can see from this, there's not a lot too this in terms of components. In fact, there's only five: cream, milk, sugar, salted caramel and vanilla. With that, Turkey Hill has taken those five components and put together something very impressive visually. I mean, c'mon, look at the size of that caramel swirl in the picture above. Incredible! When I first took the lid off of this, all I saw was Turkey Hill's standard smooth and pillowy vanilla ice cream and admittedly, I was slightly disappointed. Once I got spoonful deep though, my whole world was rocked because I was met with what you see above. Absolutely unbelievable, don't you think? Gooey, sweet smell and basically my eyes wanted to make love to this container.
While you may eat with your eyes (somewhat), you truly eat with your mouth and when my first spoonful of this went in, I was completely pleased. The vanilla ice cream itself was standard stuff, but since Turkey Hill's vanilla ice cream is typically flavorful, standard stuff is good stuff. As for the caramel...what a dream. It was gooey and sweet, but not overly sweet since the presence of the sea salt (thus salted caramel) tamed that sweetness factor a bit. When mixed together, this was a sweet, gooey and fluffy all at the same time. Basically, it was everything that you could ever wish for out of a basic flavor concoction of caramel and vanilla ice cream.
Buy It or Fly By It? Don't let basic fool you here when you just look at the front of the container. Heck, maybe that's why I stayed away so long. The basic qualities of the containers just didn't interest me, but after tasting this, I was completely wrong. This is delicious and gets a resounding BUY IT rating. If you see this in your grocer's freezer case (Turkey Hill is sometimes hard to find), don't hesitate to grab a container and try it out for yourself. Much like my experience, I doubt you'll regret it.

Looks pretty good! Wish I could find more Turkey Hill products in my area. We only get the basics around here...
ReplyDeleteWe don't get a ton of them and when we do get them, it usually takes a while. I was glad when I finally saw this one though!
DeleteWhoa, you're just as oblivious as that ice cream "informant" guy. The all natural line isn't new at all. They just rebranded it this year to draw more attention to it.
ReplyDeleteIf that is truly the case, then congrats to them because I fell for it. That's called good re-branding. Many companies should be envious.
DeleteMight want to do a quick google search https://turkeyhill.com/press/turkey-hill-dairy/releases/2013-03-26-all-natural-ice-cream.aspx
Deletearound here the black cherry ice cream by Turkey hill is flying off the shelves......michigan
ReplyDeleteBreyer's chocolate is richer with similar ingredients...
ReplyDeleteBreyer's all natural chocolate now contains whey and tara gum (tara gum is in all or most of Breyer's all natural flavors). In addition, the Breyer's flavors with mix ins, such as oreos, had to be legally labeled as "frozen dessert" not ice cream. Breyer's seems to be moving away from their all natural heritage. Glad to see Turkey Hill is filling the void.
DeleteAs the post above indicates, Breyer's no longer offers any All Natural ice creams. To save money, Breyers has reduced the cream in their ice cream and replaced it with thickeners like Carrageenan (Seaweed) and the "gums"--Tara, Guar, and Locust.
DeleteI'm aware of only one mass-produced competitor for Turkey Hill's All Natural line: Hagaan Dazs.
