To add on to this morning's review of one of Edy's seasonal limited time offerings, I've got this afternoon post of another one of these offerings with this review of Edy's Slow Churned Egg Nog Light Ice Cream as opposed to the multiple review that I've seen of the full power version of this. I do this because I'm at least attempting to continue the guise of this being a somewhat healthy-ish blog. Like the last, I picked this up at Marsh on sale for $2.50 for a 1.5 quart container. Since it is light ice cream, it has a relatively modest 100 calories per serving and there's twelve servings per container. One thing to note about this Egg Nog ice cream is that I personally despised Egg Nog when I was a kid, so the kid in my dreads this review. When I got older and was introduced to Egg Nog with alcohol in it, well, let's just say that my opinion of Egg Nog changed, so the adult in me is very much looking forward to this review.
Visually, there's not a whole lot to look at here. It's off-white colored ice cream and it's fairly creamy, especially for a light ice cream. After that, there's nothing else to see. While there not be anything to see, there's a hell of a lot to smell as when I first opened this, I was immediately hit with a strong scent of egg nog, meaning dairy and nutmeg all at once. The nutmeg was borderline overpowering and being that has always been my least favorite ingredient in egg nog, I was slightly disappointed by it's overwhelming presence. That said, I wasn't going to let that cloud my review.
After my first spoonful, it was all nutmeg, all the time. There was a slight creaminess from the dairy and egg at the back end of the spoonful, but all I could taste here was nutmeg and it had quite a bit of kick to it. It was the kind of kick that got into your sinuses and made your nose itch and eventually run. That's how strong it was and frankly, I didn't particularly enjoy it. Nutmeg aside, which was tough, the rest of the ice cream was fairly creamy and the dairy taste of the egg nog was pleasing. It's just too bad that the nutmeg took over so much.
Buy It or Fly By It? As an ice cream only, I would FLY BY IT. There's just too much nutmeg here for me to enjoy it. But as a potential recipe mix-in, I'd considering picking it up again. What I mean is that this could be the base of an interesting egg nog milkshake where you add in a little chilled rum and then mix it all into a blender. Hmm...a dessert treat that gets you smashed. That's definitely something that I could absolutely support. I just can't support the ice cream on its own though.

Wow, I was really disappointed when this quickly sold out of my local store and I was unable to get some, but this review makes me feel better about it.
