Review: Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Delight Pastry Crisps

Kicking off Special K week and adding to my collection of Special K reviews, I'll start with a product that basically just jumped from the shelf at Meijer into my car since it used the oldest and easiest trick in the book of "NEW" on the box to rope me, a complete rube, into making the purchase.  I've had one of these pastry crisps before and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I was hoping that enjoyment would carry over into this Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Delight Pastry Crisps that I picked up on sale for $2.50.  Each box contains five pasty crisps packages (two crisps per package) and each package comes in at 0.88 ounces and 100 calories.  That's for both pastry crisps, so the math geniuses of the world can divide that in half to figure out the weight and calorie load of each pastry crisp.

One thing is for certain with these products that are mass produced by companies like Kellogg's, General Mills, etc...they find a formula they like and stick to it, only deviating slightly with each different variation (as it should be; they are mass produced after all.  In the case of this pastry crisp, the only deviation is the flavor included and since this is "chocolatey," the internal filling of the pastry crisp is a surprisingly creamy chocolate and the top of it is topped with a chocolatey swirl.  Outside of that, the only other observations I can make is that this is quite light and airy and that is certainly helped by the fact that the pastry crisp itself is aerated in order to help with the baking process.  Oh yeah, one other note...the chocolate in this smelled absolutely DELICIOUS and made me more than excited to eat this.  It smelled just like a rich milk chocolate and if you are a chocolate freak, you know what smell I am talking about...it's the kind of smell that makes you salivate.

While the taste of the chocolate didn't make me salivate, I will say that it was darn good.  It was surprisingly creamy and dense and while not sugary sweet, did have the sweetness that you'd get out of typical milk chocolate.  Basically, it was kind of synonymous of what you'd find in a classic Hershey's bar.  The pastry portion, while airy to the touch and feel, was actually quite dense and mildly dry, so the creaminess of the chocolate helped moisten that up in my mouth as I chewed through.  In terms of the prevalence of flavors, the actual pastry is 75% of the taste of this and since the pastry had a fine and almost fresh-baked taste (obviously it wasn't), that was more than fine with me.  The chocolate in this instance acted as a helper and the icing on the cake, so to speak, to make this a tasty product.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Special K week gets off to a good start with this one as I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  It's not pure decadence, but it is a tasty and mildly chocolatey treat that will help get you through the day as a snack.  It's low calorie too, so it fits perfectly in with the Special K Challenge of losing six pounds in two weeks if you eat Special K products.  All in all though, I just wish the chocolate flavor had been stronger.

BUY IT!!

  1. Are you going to do a review on the Special K Popcorn Chips? Also I HIGHLY suggest their Chocolately Delight cereal if you can get your hands on it.
