Review: Zone Perfect Chocolate Mint Nutrition Bar

Looking at their website, I would almost equate Zone Perfect with CLIF in the fact that they have so many different flavors of bars and so many different product lines.  I've touched on a lot of the product lines already, but this review takes me back to their Classic line of bars with this review of the Zone Perfect Chocolate Mint Nutrition Bar.  As stated before, chocolate and mint are not my favorite combination, but the more product that I have that consist of this flavor combination, the more I find myself starting to moderately enjoy it, so this bar will be another indicator to see if that trend continues.  I picked up this bar on sale at Kroger for $1.00 and it comes in at the standard size of 1.76 ounces and has 210 calories and fourteen grams of protein.

Unwrapping the bar and now that've reviewed enough of these chocolate mint products, the first thing I smelled was an overpowering smell of mint.  I do like the smell of mint quite a bit, so that was a pleasant first impression.  After that smell, I looked at the rest of the bar and as with all these Classic bars, the base of the bar was their standard rice crisp mix.  The rice crisp mix was then covered with a layer of chocolate, although it was quite a thin and disappointing one at that.  Looking at the ingredients on the wrapper, there's supposedly chocolate cookie pieces in the rice crisp mix, but honestly, I didn't see any and that was disappointing.  Oh well.

When I took my first bite, this was pretty much what I expected based on the smell...it tasted like mint.  Unfortunately, that's all it tasted like because the chocolate did not have any flavor at all.  In fact, the thinness of the chocolate layer did this bar no favors and it might as well have not been there at all.  It seems that chocolate layer was only for decoration, because it did not bring any sweetness, heartiness or any other sort of flavor that you might expect when eating chocolate.  Other than the mint flavor and its strength, the only other thing that this bar had going for it was that the rice crisp mix was quite crunchy, but of course, that is to be expected.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Frankly, this is a boring bar and not worth a purchase, so it gets a FLY BY IT rating.  It's nice to see Zone Perfect attempt the chocolate and mint combination, I suppose, but this was not a successful attempt in my opinion.  That said, at least it wasn't an offensive player, so I guess it's got that going for it.  Yahoo!

FLY BY IT!!
