Review: LALA Pecan Cereal Yogurt Smoothie

These drinkable yogurts crack me up because they just seem like they are having an identity crisis.  Am I a drink?  Am I a yogurt?  Am I a dessert?  What am I?  So instead of making a full commitment to one thing, they just decide that they want to be something to everyone like some sort of populist.  Now, I've reviewed a LALA product before and I kind of liked it, so I went into this review of the LALA Pecan with Cereal Yogurt Smoothie with positive thoughts.  By the way, I picked this one up at Kroger for $1.14 and it is seven ounces and 150 calories and five grams of protein.

When I opened this up, it was as if this was just a typical vanilla smoothie except that it had little bits of pecan and cereal spread throughout. Unfortunately, these weren't very big bits and all they really resembled was ground up cereal dust or ground up nut dust.  Obviously, that's not large at all.  As for the smoothie itself, it was somewhat thick, but thin enough that it was drinkable.  Smell-wise, it had a distinct pecan smell with a hint of vanilla at the end.

As I took my gulp, I was put off by how odd this was.  It was obviously a yogurt smoothie, but the pecan and cereal bits did nothing for this other than give it a grainy mouthfeel and make it feel weird and kind of nasty as it went down my throat.  I would compare it to drinking the milk, albeit a thick milk, out of the cereal bowl after you finish your bowl of cereal.  In terms of taste the pecan and cereal dust added nothing and all I could really taste was the vanilla yogurt.  Considering pecans and cereal were the name of this and not vanilla, that was largely disappointing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  When I saw this on the shelf at the store, I was excited by this because it seemed like a really fun idea.  Unfortunately, the quality of the execution did not match the quality of the idea and I have to give this a FLY BY IT rating.  This smoothie took a great idea, in my opinion, and made it boring and for that, I can't recommend this to anyone.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. I understand that different people will have different tastes but I wondered if we were drinking something different. It tastes incredibly strongly of pecans and is like the finest butter pecan shake you could find. The only peculiar taste I get out of it is a hint of celery, even though it contains none. It's all very pleasant and appealing, to me. And not too sweet, which I find very important in a yogurt product.
