Review: Ben & Jerry's John Lennon's Imagine Whirled Peace Ice Cream

Despite the fact that my waist line continues to expand because of this blog, I figure there is no better time than now to review another Ben & Jerry's product with this review of their John Lennon Imagine Whirled Peace.  I find Ben & Jerry's continued reference to stoners to be quite funny and since they've already hit on the Grateful Dead, why not hit on one of the leads of one of the most overrated bands of all time by naming an ice cream after John Lennon?  Sure, go for it!  Okay, so maybe they named it after him because he was such a proponent for peace and not for weed.  Well, I guess that makes sense.  Anyway, I picked up this pint on sale at Kroger for $3.00 and it is the typical four servings.  Each serving contains 270 calories, so while it is not the healthiest thing in the world (just like all Ben & Jerry's products), it falls somewhere in the middle of all the caloric bombs that they put out on the market.

As with one of my typical Ben & Jerry's reviews, I'll just copy the product description from the website to save time and space:  "Caramel & Sweet Cream Ice Creams Swirled with Fudge Peace Signs & Toffee Cookie Pieces."  So there you have it.  Very cunning move by Ben & Jerry to move toffee cookie pieces into a pint named after a Brit since toffee itself is British.  Boy, they think of everything.  I can confirm that all the listed ingredients were in the pint and while the peace signs were not ample, they certainly were scattered throughout.  The one thing that I was pleasantly surprised by was the number of toffee pieces.  I love toffee and being that they were amply spread throughout the pint, I was a happy man.  It truly surprised me how much toffee there was.

With my first spoonful, I could clearly taste the caramel ice cream as it had more of a burnt caramel taste than a sweet caramel taste.  Being that they already have sweet cream ice cream in here, they probably didn't want to double up on that sweet taste, so I'm assuming that's why they went that route.  As for the sweet cream ice cream, I can't really taste it, but that could just be me because I've found sweet cream ice cream to be the biggest marketing crock perpetrated on the public ever.  I don't know what makes them call it sweet cream, but it tastes no different than a flat ice cream to me.  It's not even vanilla, if that means anything.  Dissertation aside, the actual ice cream base worked pretty well in here because of the caramel ice cream.  As for the add-ins, they were quite a nice compliment to the cream.  The toffee cookie pieces added a nice loose and grainy crunch and also had that biting and heavy sweetness that toffee tends to have.  The fudge piece signs added a nice hint of dense fudge and while not overly sweet, you could definitely tell that it was fudge.  Also, these fudge pieces were quite hard, so they added a different kind of crunch to the chewing texture of the pint.  Frankly, you are really spooning this pint as much as you are chewing this pint.  Being that I'm an add-in guy, I prefer eating my ice cream this way.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite being named after an overrated musician, I've got to give this pint a very strong BUY IT rating.  I would almost go so far as to say this is delicious and definitely would rate this toward the top of all the Ben & Jerry's ice creams that I've had.  I just wish it was named after someone that I didn't genuinely dislike like I do with John Lennon.  Oh well, I guess I can't win them all.

BUY IT!!
So after writing my review, I went out to check and see if my ice cream hero Dubba had reviewed this one at his blog, OnSecondScoop.com, and turns out he has done a review and his review is very similar thoughts to mine.  It's funny how much he and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to frozen desserts.

Oh yeah, one more thing...in case you had forgotten that you had just devoured a pint of ice cream named after a famous musician peace lover, Ben & Jerry's found a way to print the peace, love, dove philosophy on the inside of the pint too, which is the first time I've seen them do something like that in all the reviews I've done.  Here's your peaceful reminder to make you feel more okay with yourself after you've added a few inches to your waistline...

  1. I completely agree with your review of this flavor. As for Lennon, he's only overrated if you have no understanding of the fact that the Beatles took what was rock n roll and created the blueprints for most styles of modern rock music. They popularized the idea of bands writing their own songs, along with the Beach Boys introduced the idea of the album as a cohesive work of art, pioneered numerous recording techniques, and were the first band to really delve into studio experimentation. Literally every rock band is directly or indirectly influenced by the Beatles. Stick to food.

    1. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard John Lennon called overrated before reading this review. I mean not by ANYONE.... EVER. It really is good ice cream though, even if the reviewer may me clueless about music.

  2. can only imagine whirled peace these days....can't find it anywhere...man alive times are indeed gettin harsh when B&J's appear to have given up on this one....our daughter asked for world peace for her 10th bday...so I thought the best we could do is to at least buy a pint of it for her....seems even that's gonna be as difficult of a request to fill than the literal "nato" version :O sigh!!
