Review: Larabar Blueberry Muffin Food Bar

Looking back at my prior Larabar reviews, it's both sad and amazing to me that I've only found one Larabar that I've truly liked out of all the reviews.  That's just mind boggling to me that there can be so many different varieties of a product and I've only essentially found one of them to be appetizing.  They are all edible, but none are particularly flavorful, in my opinion.  Anyway, in my continuing quest to find another Larabar that I find tasty, I'm led to the Blueberry Muffin flavor food bar.  I picked it up at Kroger on sale for $1.00 and it contains 190 calories and four grams of protein packed into a 1.6 ounce bar.

One thing I am always amused by in these Larabar products is their surprisingly few amount of ingredients.  It's usually about three ingredients, so I was surprised when I looked at this one and saw that it consisted of six different ingredients (dates, almonds, blueberries, blueberry juice concentrate, lemon juice concentrate and vanilla extract), which has to be some sort of record.  That said, the bar is composed pretty much as any other Larabar.  It consists of a date puree that binds everything together with small bits of almonds and blueberries spread throughout.  The blueberries are dried, kind of like raisins and they are plentiful.  Based on that texture and my love of blueberries, I was pretty excited thinking that I may have found a good Larabar.

Unfortunately, I thought wrong.  Biting into this, it was soft and chewy as all Larabar products are, but it essentially tasted like nothing.  Well, that's not entirely accurate...it mostly tasted like nothing with occasional bouts of slight crunch and occasional bouts of blueberry sweetness to break up the monotony of chewing.  At the very end of the chew, you could taste a hint of the lemon juice extract that added a little tartness to the bar, along with the blueberries, but I would say the whole flavor was mostly nothing and that was entirely a disappointment.

Buy It or Fly By It?  FLY BY IT.  After being so excited by how this looked, I felt entirely let down by how it tasted.  I know there are people out there that enjoy Larabar products, but for the most part, I just can't get behind them to this point.  They are chewy, I suppose, but they lack flavor and they are so tiny that I don't see how they can really do much of anything for anyone.  That said, they've got a lot of flavors, so I'll continue to my quest to find one that I truly like.

FLY BY IT!!
