Review: Quaker Popped Sour Cream & Onion Rice Snacks

Editor's Note:  While the product has stayed the same, Quaker now markets these under a different named and they are now called "Quaker Popped Rice Snacks." The review below applies the same.

I like Sour Cream & Onion potato chips a lot and if you are a regular reader of this blog, you are problem thinking, "what does this guy not like a lot?"  Well, the answer is bananas and...sour cream!  Yep, I don't like sour cream at all, but for some reason, I like the chips a lot.  Seeing these Quaker Popped Sour Cream & Onion Rice Snacks on the shelf at Walmart for $1.39 made me curious enough to see if I liked these as much as I like the actual potato chips.  Each serving is 130 calories and as usual, there's about three servings per bag.

Texturally, these fall into my "powdery" category as they are light and flaky and are covered with the sour cream & onion flavor dusting, which you can see with the little green flakes on the Quakes representing the onions.  The sour cream is the white powder, which is a bit more difficult to see due to my sweet iPhone 4 only being a five megapixel camera.

Tastewise, these are just blah.  The have a faint sour cream & onion taste, but it is not strong like you find in the potato chip.  Honestly, most of the time I felt I was only eating a regular rice snack that was a little bit off.  That's how weak the flavoring was.  As a professed lover of the chips of the same flavor, I was a very sad and defeated man.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This was a short review because it wasn't really worth wasting my time on something that was so clearly a mail it in effort on Quaker's part.  So, with that, you should definitely FLY BY IT.  The Quakes line has several hits and misses in their product line and this is definitely one of those misses.  Stay away.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. I'm sad to see a Quakes in the miss department, but I have to agree with you. I found them too little in taste and too dry. I meant to get the ranch flavor and accidentally got the sour cream and onion flavor. I'm trying to finish them now, since I hate to waste, but I will not be making this mistake again! Ranch or cheddar cheese for me, or nothing else!
