Review: Planters NUT-rition Energy Bar

Planters knows peanuts, so in the least shocking development of all time, they have a line of Nut-rition products that focus on peanuts.  I've already reviewed the Antioxidant bar before, so this time I'm taking a look at the Energy bar version of the Nut-rition line.  I picked this up in a box of five for around $3.00 at Meijer.  Each bar weighs 1.23 ounces and is 170 calories with five grams of protein.  That seems like a small amount of protein for something based on nuts, but I'm not a scientist, nutritionist or particularly smart, so I can't tell you exactly why that is the case.  One other thing that I find funny is that the packaging specifically says that this is a "Chewy Nut Bar" yet aren't nuts supposed to be crunchy?  Weird.

The Energy bar blend of Planters Nut-rition bars focuses on three real ingredients:  honey roasted peanuts, almonds and chocolate.  As you can see above, the peanuts are quite large and plentifully spread throughout the bar.  The almonds, while not large, are also fairly liberally spread as well.  The one ingredient that doesn't get a lot of attention though is the chocolate as it is just drizzled over the top for what is seemingly just decoration.  The rest of the bar is bound together with peanut butter and also a typical rice crisp that you'd find in one of these "health" bars.

In terms of taste, it has a very, very strong peanut flavor and considering this is a Planters product, that should not be surprising.  Also, there's nothing "chewy" about this bar at all as it is so crunchy that it is almost rock hard.  It snaps when you bite into it because it is so crunchy.  The almond taste is really not noticeable, although almonds are a fairly weak tasting nut to begin with.  The chocolate is also very faint in the bar, but you can definitely tell it is there and it adds a sweet little accent to the powerful taste of the peanuts/peanut butter.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that a box of these can get a bit expensive, Mr. Peanut continues his winning streak on this blog as I'm going to give this a BUY IT rating.  I love peanuts and with the strong peanut flavoring of this bar, it fills quite a craving, especially since I'm such a crunchy junkie.  That said, if you have weak teeth or don't like crunchy food, you are probably want to stay away from this.

One more thing before I take my scientist lab coat off for the day and return us to our regularly scheduled programming...since peanuts are technically not nuts and are actually legumes, shouldn't this bar be called Planters Legume-trition Energy Bar.  LOL, okay, I need to get a life.

BUY IT!!
