Review: Skinny Cow Vanilla Low Fat Ice Cream Sandwich

This is my second Skinny Cow product review here at the blog.  In my first review, I found that the taste of the bar didn't really justify the cost of the bar and gave it a FLY BY IT rating.  Still, in my never ending quest for "healthy" desserts (and also armed with a $1.00 off coupon), I marched myself into my local CVS and picked up a box of these Vanilla Low Fat Ice Cream Sandwiches.  There's six per box I used my coupon, couple with a sale, to pick this up for $2.99.  Each sandwich contains 140 calories and comes in at a fairly decent sized four fluid ounces per sandwich.  In fact, I would say this is comparable to your typical ice cream sandwich in size, just shaped a bit differently.

As you can see from the box and my picture above, there's no great mystery in how this sandwich is constructed.  It's just like any other ice cream sandwich...chocolate cookies on the top and bottom of the sandwich and vanilla ice cream in the middle.  The only difference with this one from a regular bar is that the vanilla ice cream is low fat and 97% fat free.

Well, it looks like a typical ice cream sandwich, so did it taste like one?  I can unequivocally say yes.  Usually when dealing with low fat ice creams, you get a thin or "icy" taste from the ice cream.  The vanilla ice cream in this sandwich though not full flavored like your typical ice cream used in an ice cream sandwich, but it was a reasonable approximation and if you are looking to cut calories, this is a good way.  The chocolate cookies on the top and bottom were pretty much as you'd expect as they had a nice, but not overpowering chocolate flavor and that was about it.  Basically, this tasted just like a regular ice cream sandwich and when you are dealing with something that is a diet product, that is a good thing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that I found this ice cream sandwich to be solid tasting, the budget conscious consumer in me must give it a FLY BY IT rating.  I absolutely hate it when I have to give something that has quality taste a rating like that, but sometimes the taste just isn't worth the cost in my mind.  That said, if you are willing to pay the additional few bucks in order to save the calories as part of your diet plan or can find it on sale at a reasonable price, then certainly go for it.  Unfortunately, since I'm a penny-pincher by nature, that is something that I just can't do.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. Skinny Cow has the best tasting diet ice cream out there. But yeah, it can get a little pricey.
