Review: JELL-O Strawberry Sundae Pudding Snack

Here in 2012, JELL-O has introduced two new pudding cup flavors. I've already reviewed the S'mores flavor, but next up for the new product introductions is the Strawberry Sundae pudding cup.  These both are due to be introduced nationally in March, but they've been available at my local Meijer for a few weeks now.  I picked this six pack of pudding cups up on sale for $2.50 this past weekend and  each pudding cup is four ounces and 110 calories, just like the S'mores flavor.

As you can see in the picture on the packaging and the picture above, this pudding cup is made up of a base layer of strawberry pudding and then is topped with an odd strawberry jam-type substance.  Judging by the product photo, this jam type substance (it's a bit looser than a typical jam) is meant to be the strawberry "syrup" part of a sundae while the strawberry pudding (very light pink hue) is meant to be the ice cream part of the sundae.  I will say that it smells of strawberry, but it's not particularly overpowering.  So, other than that, there's not a whole lot going on here.

So how did it taste?  Well, not like much other than what you'd expect.  The pudding or "ice cream" part of the sundae carried a very faint strawberry flavor.  It wasn't particularly sweet or overpowering, but you could tell it was strawberry...barely.  The jam or "syrup" has a strong and sweet strawberry taste and it feels like a stiff syrup in your mouth instead of the runny and gooey characteristic feel of your normal ice cream syrup.  It's a good thing that this is so sweet and powerful of a strawberry taste, because if it was anything like the pudding, this would be the most boring treat of all time.  Instead, it's just a mix of strawberry tasting weirdness.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've got to say FLY BY IT on this one.  I may not be the world's biggest fan of strawberries and may think they are overrated, but I do in fact like them so I'm not completely biased.  That said, I don't particularly like this pudding cup because it does not remind me of a strawberry sundae at all.  In fact, it sort of reminds me of some sort of weird and poorly made strawberry milkshake that can get a little chunky that has a bit too much strawberry taste.  Just so strange.  While the S'mores flavor was a winner for new flavors in my opinion, this one was a definite loser.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. I'll agree with fly by it. While these aren't bad mixed together, I can't imagine wanting to buy them again (wonder if I could use these as an ice cream topping)

    1. I don't think I could possibly use this as an ice cream topping for real ice cream. It would ruin the ice cream!

  4. Great for watching calories without the punch of high calories in ice cream.
