Review: JELL-O S'mores Pudding Snack

As I was aimlessly wandering through my local Meijer recently, I happened to find myself standing in the dairy portion of the store in front of one of my favorite areas of the case, the pudding section.  I was browsing the case looking for my standard sugar free JELL-O offerings and when I looked down toward one of the bottom shelves, I came across this JELL-O offering, the S'mores pudding cup flavor (no specific website info is available).  I had never seen this before and using my strong powers of deduction and the fact that it said "New!" on the packaging, I knew that it was a new product and that I had to have it and give it a try.  It's not my standard sugar free and "healthy" JELL-O purchase like I've reviewed in the past, but sometimes curiosity takes over and it got the best of me here.  So, I picked up a six pack on sale for $2.50 and went on my merry way.  Each pudding cup is four ounces and has 110 calories, by the way.

In case you have lived a deprived live and do not know what a S'more is, the standard S'more is made up of a graham cracker, topped by a piece of chocolate and then topped by a marshmallow.  Usually, they are melted over a campfire, but not always.  Some people just eat them that way, while most turn it into a S'mores sandwich and eat it with another graham cracker holding the marshmallow and chocolate bar piece on the inside (as depicted on the package).  In the case of this JELL-O pudding cup, they held out the graham cracker piece for obvious reasons, but the base of the pudding cup was JELL-O's standard chocolate pudding.  On top of that was the marshmallow and I'll call it a "concoction" because this was not pudding as I would have expected.  It had a light and airy texture, much like a...well, much like a marshmallow and I found this particularly shocking because it was not at all what I expected (I tried to get a good shot of this in my photo but wasn't particularly successful).  I expected it to be heavy and comparable to standard pudding, but it really was like a marshmallow and in my mind that gets this one off to a good start.

Not only was the topping marshmallow-like in its texture, but it also tasted like one too.  It wasn't chewy like a marshmallow can tend to be, but it was airy, sweet and light.  Frankly, I was surprised by this yet again because it was completely unexpected.  When I mixed the light and fluffy marshmallow topping with the chocolate pudding (again, it was just standard chocolate pudding and tasted that way too), I was transported to a alternate dimension where if I shut my eyes, I could have actually thought that I was eating a S'more, minus the graham cracker of course.

Buy It or Fly By It?  You absolutely need to BUY IT.  I can't describe to you how much I enjoyed this and how much fun it was.  I wish it had a graham cracker, but beggars can't be choosers and if you think about it logically, having a graham cracker sitting in here would probably be more trouble than it is worth in the overall scheme of things.  It would get soggy and mushy and no one wants that.  I'm not sure if this is a permanent flavor or just an experiment by JELL-O, but if you are in your store and see this one on the shelf, snatch it up and give it a shot while you can.

BUY IT!!

  1. we may agree about ice cream, but we don't agree about this. while the marshmallow may be "light", to me it felt slimy and gritty (kind of like the picture shows) and maybe even bubbly/plasticy in a way. I think it might be some kind of graham injection into the marshmallow, i don't really know, but technically if you mix the whole thing together, i find it a little less disgusting. I'll be curious to see what others think (got mine at walmart)

    1. The texture of the marshmallow was certainly very different, but I wasn't particularly offended by it. I can see how others my not like though. It will be interesting to see how everyone else responds.

  2. I really like this as well. The marshmallow layer reminded me more of their mousse line of pudding cups being so airy. I tried getting a bit of each in every bite and the contrast brought the flavor together.

    1. Great comparison. The marshmallow really was like that Mousse Temptations stuff. I wish I had thought of that! Maybe this should be your blog instead! Ha!

    1. Dude, I've got to disagree with you here. I've had the Oreo flavor and it's maybe the worst flavor that I've ever had. There will be a review coming later, but it definitely is not a product that I will be purchasing again.

  5. I like it. I thought the marshmallow topping had a graham flavor to it...

  6. I love the smores pudding. The oreo is definately the worst I've had followed by the cup of dirt. The pudding itself tastes like dark chocolate although the mix that comes with it is ok

  7. I totally agree with you on this review. I loved these! They taste so good and I love the moussey marshmellow top of it.

I also have to agree that the Oreo ones are just disgusting! Too chocolatey and not enough cream!
