As if you couldn't tell by the fact that I link his reviews in nearly every ice cream post that I do, I spend a lot of time over at On Second Scoop. Being that I spend so much time over there (and he writes about it so much), it's pretty easy to see that he considers Milk & Cookies to be in the pantheon of Ben & Jerry's greatest flavors. He writes about it in many reviews, but when you go back to the original review that he completed, it's easy to see that he holds it in such high esteem. Seeing all of these mentions of it made me want to give it a shot, so I picked up a pint of this at Meijer on sale for $3.00. Each pint contains four servings as usual and each serving is 270 calories.
Ben & Jerry's description of this one is as follows: "Vanilla Ice Cream with a Chocolate Cookie Swirl, Chocolate Chip & Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies." As you can see in the picture above, there's so much going on in this pint with all the ice creams, swirls, cookies, etc., that I'm just going to have to take their word for it. I will say that the cookies are very plentiful and also pretty decent sized too (take a look at the size of those regular chocolate chip and chocolate chocolate chip cookie chunks!). Sometimes Ben & Jerry's shorts on you on mix-ins with their pints, but they are definitely not doing that with this one.
As I shoveled this into my mouth, I was immediately transported back to some of my fondest childhood memories of sitting at the table with my grandma dunking her delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies into milk. My favorite part of milk and cookies back then was how the milk would make the cookie soggy and leave remnants of the cookies everywhere as they broke up. The ultimate treat was drinking the soggy milk and cookie mix at the bottom of the glass and this ice cream was the absolute frozen personification of that. There's nothing special about the cookies or the vanilla ice cream used in this one, but when you put them all together, they make something special and I completely understand Dubba's love of this one. Don't get me wrong, they cookies are DELICIOUS, but other than their wonderful and traditional taste, there's nothing that particularly makes them unique and that's just fine. It's the whole comfort food factor...when you find something familiar, it doesn't need to knock your socks off because it just makes you feel good.
Buy It or Fly By It? Dubba nailed this one and I've got to completely agree and recommend to BUY IT. It's not often when you find a food item that compliments each other so perfectly, but this one does that and I'd recommend that everyone give it at least one shot. You won't regret it. I know I didn't.
