Review: Edy's (Dreyer's) Grand Rocky Road Ice Cream

I've had a lot of Edy's flavors that I've tried out here on the blog, but I've mostly stayed away from the "regular" Edy's flavors for whatever reason.  Maybe because I've found those flavors boring, but on a recent trip to Meijer, I decided to make the leap and try out one of their regular "Rich & Creamy Grand" flavors with this review of the Edy's Grand Rocky Road Ice Cream.  While Rocky Road is about as traditional of a flavor as you can get, I've never really found it even remotely interesting despite the presence of several things that I love (chocolate, marshmallows and almonds).  So, the fact that I've stayed away so long is odd.  Regardless, I picked up a 1.5 quart container of this on sale for $2.50 and each container contains twelve half-cup servings at 160 calories per serving.

As you can see, this container has a base of chocolate ice cream with mix-ins of marshmallows and almonds.  The marshmallows are plentifully spread and are roughly the same size of those mini marshmallows that you can get to put in your mug of hot chocolate.  They are also quite soft, which considering they are sitting in a container of frozen product is a good thing.  As for the almonds, well, they are in there, but they aren't plentiful nor are they very large.  In fact, the almonds could be described as bits at best and frankly, I found them to be particularly embarrassing.  If you are looking for a way to add crunch to a soft ice cream, I would expect that the crunchy parts would be a bit bigger.  Obviously Edy's disagrees on that one.

In terms of taste, this was just about as boring as I expected it to be.  The chocolate flavored ice cream definitely tasted like chocolate, although it was slightly flat.  It wasn't particularly rich or creamy in any way...it was just basic stuff.  I'm not going to spend much time touching on the almonds because I've bashed them already, but let's just say that their embarrassing visual appearance pretty much describes their place in this container in terms of taste and how much they bring to the table.  The only redeeming quality about this entire container was the marshmallows were chewy and brought an interesting textural feel to each spoonful where I was fortunate enough to have one.  They didn't bring much flavor though, so all they really did was break up the liquidity of the melted ice cream in my mouth.

Buy It or Fly By It?  My first inclination about this and also about Rocky Road was right when it came to this container of ice cream.  It definitely wasn't grand, nor was it even that good for that matter...it was just blah.  Don't get me wrong, it could have been worse, but it's one that I'd rate as a FLY BY IT and definitely won't be grabbing out of the freezer case again anytime soon (or ever).

FLY BY IT!!
