Review: MET-Rx Protein Plus Creamy Peanut Butter Crisp Bar

Always looking for protein and looking to get away from the seemingly endless number of Pure Protein flavors, it's time for a MET-Rx Protein Plus review.  I'm sure you are pumped!  Anyway, this time I'm looking at the MET-Rx Protein Plus Creamy Peanut Butter Crisp Bar which clocks in a relatively large 3.0 ounces (bigger than a typical Snickers) with 310 calories and thirty grams of protein.  The packing says that this one is "Naturally Flavored", which I always find debatable with a bar that is nearly a complete work of chemical engineering, but let's not split hairs.  I picked this one up at CVS for roughly $2.50.

This one is composed of a bottom "crisp" layer, although I'm not so sure what the "crisp" layer is trying in terms of flavor.  It is is just for a crispy component?  I really have no idea.  On top of that is the peanut butter "cream" layer, which is not really all that creamy as all.  It's somewhat pliable and gelatinous, but creamy is not a word that I would use to describe it. Still, sometimes marketers win out and that's the way products get described.  The outer layer is coated in what I thought was a peanut butter coating, but after looking at the wrapper, I found out that it is peanut butter with a hint of caramel flavoring thrown in.  Peanut butter and caramel are one of my favorite sweet flavor combinations, so I was looking forward to this.

After my first bite, all I could taste was peanut butter with a some crunch it in and that was a good thing.  It was actually pretty appealing.  The peanut butter flavor was strong, but not overwhelming and the "crisp" layer actually did maintain some crispiness throughout and provided a nice contrast to the peanut butter "cream" and outer coating.  Being a peanut butter lover, every single taste component of this entire package did a nice job contrasting each other and it made me appreciate the primary feature ingredient of peanut butter even more.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Dare I say it?  Could this be one of the rare protein bars that tastes almost as good or as good as an actual candy bar?  Yes, I can say it.  This MET-Rx Creamy Peanut Butter Crisp bar (that's a mouthful) is actually really darn good and I would definitely say BUY IT.  It stacks up against a lot of the candy bars out there and although it has a heavier calorie load than a lot of candy bars (due to its size), it is definitely worth a purchase and not the mockery that I usually give the majority of these protein bars.

BUY IT!!

  1. The other flavors I've tried have always been way too medicinal, and the protein blend is garbage.

How did you fare with the 26g of sugar alcohols?

Have you ever tried quest bars?

  2. Sugar alcohols don't really bother me, so I was okay.

I have had Quest bars before, but it has been a while. I will make sure that I get around to reviewing some here on the blog so that I can make sure that I'm comprehensive!
