Review: Dannon Oikos Traditional Piña Colada Greek Yogurt

So, I like sales.  I really, really like sales.  That should come as no surprise to anyone that has spend any sort of time reading this blog.  If you are new to the blog, you now know that I really, really like sales.  Anyway, sale at Meijer recently prompted me to pick up this limited edition cup of Dannon Oikos Traditional Piña Colada Greek Yogurt (it's so limited it doesn't even have a spot on their website) on sale for $0.88.  It's a spin on the summer-ish (or perhaps just tropical) cocktail and since I love cocktails, I knew this would be right up my alley.  The cup itself comes in at 5.3 ounces and has 160 calories with eleven grams of protein.  This adds to my already expansive Dannon collection and while a lot of them are boring flavors that I've looked at just because they are in the diary case, this one actually kind of intrigues/excites me for some reason.

Opening this up, there is NOT a lot to look at.  A thick, creamy Greek yogurt  (after stirring) that is all white in color.  No add-ins, no marmalades, nothing.  Just Greek yogurt and that's it.  I will say that it did smell of both that Greek smell (sour/tart/tang) and also of coconut, so it wasn't entirely Plain Jane.  I wasn't expecting a lot in terms of presentation and it's a good thing I wasn't, because there wasn't a lot of presentation here.  Maybe lack of presentation is why this is traditional?

In my first spoonful, I was immediately met with a punch of that sweet/tart/tang of Greek yogurt flavor.  After that, it smoothed out and I was hit by the permeance and tang of both pineapple and coconut, as I would if I were drinking a (virgin) Piña Colada.  The coconut flavor was not overly sweet, but it definitely was noticeable and lingered in each spoonful.  The pineapple flavor was definitely tangy and hit very quickly and then dissipated almost as quickly before the coconut cream flavor took over.  The coconut cream flavor definitely soothed the punch of both the Greek yogurt and pineapple and that was a good thing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Certainly not anything that is going to make me feel like I'm sitting by the pool in the summer like the drink would, but it was enough to make a quality eating experience, so I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  The coconut and pineapple take a bit to get used to and if you are averse to either of those flavors, I'd steer clear of this one.  If you like those flavors or Piña Coladas in general, I'd steer toward this one if you see it in the store in its limited edition run.

BUY IT!!
