Not to get all philosophical and deep here, but sometimes I walk through the supermarket and am just amazed by the product selection and the thought/effort that goes into getting so many products into a store. Granted, distributors make it easier by selling things in bulk and coordinating a fair portion of the logistics, but it is still amazing. I mention this because upon a recent perusal of one of my many local Kroger stores, I noticed yet another new (to me) product that had made its way to the refrigerator section with this cup of La Chocolãt Mint with Dark Chocolate Chips Lowfat Yogurt. This 6.0 ounce cup was on sale for $0.99 and it packed in 200 calories and seven grams of protein. It also had 1% milkfat, so I guess that just shows that there's going to be a bit of fat in this one. On another note, it's also kosher and gluten free if you are interested in those types of things.
Upon removing the cover off of this cup, there were obviously two immediate visual observances. First, this was a faded green color as I'd expect mint yogurt to be and second, there were a lot of dark chocolate chips (more rectangular shaped than teardrop shaped) spread throughout the container of yogurt. It had somewhat creamy consistency, but not overly creamy as it was a bit loose when I shook the container. In terms of smell, it did have a minty smell to it, but it wasn't overly strong.
When I took my first spoonful of this, I was expecting to be popped in the mouth by mint flavor. That was not the case. There was definite mint flavor, but it wasn't overly strong and it tasted kind of off for some reason. It was almost as if the mint wasn't mixing with the milk of the yogurt correctly. It also seemed like the mint flavor needed to be stronger or "fresher", but I'm not quite sure. In terms of texture, the dark chocolate chips certainly brought some graininess to this prior to them melting, but they really didn't add much flavor as they were overpowered by the mint yogurt that just didn't seem right to me.
Buy It or Fly By It? This whole cup of yogurt just seemed bizarre to me. I used to not like the mint and chocolate combination, but it's grown on me and I actually find myself liking it more often than not now. This yogurt was not one of those instances though as the yogurt just seemed off to me, as I've previously mentioned. It's for that reason that I have to give this a FLY BY IT rating. Perhaps I just got a bad container (I'm guessing not), but this is not a mint chocolate combination that I'm fond of.
