I've alluded previously to the fact that this blog is getting yogurt heavy and that assault on yogurt continues once again today. Today's review adds another Yoplait product to the review catalog as I take a rare look at a yogurt that still has some milk fat in it as I look at this single serving cup of Yoplait Greek Cafe Mocha 2% Greek Yogurt. I was able to pick this one up at Kroger for $1.00 and it comes in at 5.3 ounces and is packed with a respectable 150 calories and eleven grams of protein.
First things first...before I was able to get the entire top off of this, I was already being hit with the smell of coffee. I'm cool with that because I'm good with coffee, but I didn't expect to be hit by that smell quite so soon. So, after my aromatic burst of coffee smell, I immediately started taking a look at the Greek yogurt itself and really there's only two things to observe. First, it was more watery than I expected and second, it was light brown in color. One could surmise that is from the milk that is added to the coffee and that lightens the color. That's about it. This one was pretty boring to look at.
In terms of flavor, the coffee flavor was right on top of my taste buds immediately, but I expected that. After that coffee flavor hit, I was then hit by a nice taste of chocolate and also a bit of vanilla. I'm not sure that I expected that (I've never actually had a cafe mocha drink, so I had no basis for comparison), but whether I expected it or not, I do know that I enjoyed it quite a bit. After that coffee and then chocolate vanilla flavor, I was then hit by the final hit of the tart Greek flavor. The coffee mainly overpowered thankfully because too much Greek tartness would have probably made this weird and potentially even gross. Just having it in a minimal amount at the end was just fine though.
Buy It or Fly By It? I'm torn on this one. The coffee and Greek yogurt combination is just weird to me and all I could think about while eating this was how weird it was. That said, I think what makes me give this a BUY IT rating was the pleasant taste of the chocolate that accented the coffee flavor. Without that chocolate, I'm not sure I could recommend this because it was just so darn weird. With all of that said though, if you are not a coffee person, you will not like this at all and should stay away (you probably wouldn't even buy it in the first place). If you are a coffee person, you'll either find this oddly appealing or just plain weird and not worth eating.
