Review: Quaker Real Medleys Cherry Pistachio Multigrain Fruit & Nut Bars

I already touched on one of Quaker's attempts at turning single serving oatmeal cups into fruit and nut bars in a prior review, but today I figured that I might as well try it again.  In the same purchasing trip that generated the last review, I was able to pick up this box of five Quaker Real Medleys Cherry Pistachio Multigrain Fruit & Nut Bars at Meijer for $3.00.  Each bar inside this box comes in at 1.36 ounces and has 170 calories of multigrain fun (well, I guess my review will be judge of that).

Just like the last bar, this is a mix of oats and grains that are bound together with very sticky and mildly smelling honey, as well as some molasses.  Within that multigrain mix is a spreading of dried cherries, almonds and pistachios, which I will not had an extremely strong smell coming out of the wrapper.  The only thing I truly smelled was salt and it overtook my senses.  Salt is fine and sometimes is an essential seasoning, but it can also be too much sometimes.  At least from the smell of this bar, it seemed like it would be too much.

The smell was a harbinger of things to come because after my first bite, all I could really taste was salt with a faint hint of cherry and honey sweetness afterwards.  In terms of texture, the multigrain mix and nuts (almonds and pistachios) brought some crunch to this and those aforementioned dried cherries brought some chewiness to this, but outside of that texture, all I could really focus on was the salt flavor and how it was completely overtaking me and making me thirsty.  Had the cherry/honey combination been a bit sweeter, perhaps it could have cancelled that out, but they just couldn't do the job here.

Buy It or Fly By It?  If you are the type of person that loves salty foods or is in desperate need of a salty snack, this is right up your alley.  Being that I'm not the world's biggest fan of salty foods (I do have an occasional craving), I can't see myself seeking this out again, so I'll give it a FLY BY IT rating.  Perhaps this fits for some, but just not for me.

FLY BY IT!!
