Review: Talenti German Chocolate Cake Gelato

I mentioned in a previous review that Fresh Market has moved into my neighborhood and with them has come several new Talenti flavors that my normal grocery stores do not carry, which is a nice change of pace.  It's the aforementioned two-for-one sale that allowed me to pick up this Talenti German Chocolate Cake Gelato for roughly $3.00 (normal price was $5.99, but I got two pints for that amount).  Each pint contains the classic four half-cup size servings and each serving comes in at a hit of 240 calories.  It's also gluten free, vegetarian and kosher if you are into that kind of thing.

I just love the Talenti website's description of this, so I'm just going to copy and paste it here:  "Inspired by the classic dessert, this flavor blends creamy milk chocolate gelato with premium pieces of coconut, candied pecans, and a velvety caramel swirl throughout."  After reviewing the pint myself and taking the picture above, I'd have to say that I agree with that.  All of those add-ins were there in ample amounts and since all of those components are what make up the namesake delightful dessert, I would say Talenti gets an A+ from a presentation perspective.

I could do a one word review for this, but I'll hold off.  Instead, I'll describe this as I would a typical review.  First, I'll start with the gelato and say that it was smooth, velvety and had exceptionally pleasing chocolate flavor.  Not overly sweet, but just right.  The caramel swirl was a delightful counterpoint to that as it was rich and gooey.  The coconut pieces added a degree of sweetness to the mix as well as some graininess to the gooey caramel.  The candied pecans also brought some additional sweetness as well as some crunchy chew, so this whole container had a variety of flavors and textures.  That variety of flavors and textures made for a fun pint to work my way through and the way the ingredients were presented also made for a more than reasonable approximation of the namesake treat.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I'll do the one word review now.  Delightful.  Being that delightful is the word I'm using to describe this, it clearly gets a BUY IT rating.  It was a very good way to replicate the treat in frozen dessert form and while the namesake cake can be a bit too rich and sweet at times, this pint of gelato did not do that.  It was less rich than the cake and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this.  If you are a fan of the cake or just tasty things, this is definitely worth picking up.

  1. Have you tried the double dark chocolate? Best flavor, in my opinion.
