Review: Private Selection Sweet Honey Baklava Ice Cream

What I find interesting about these Private Selection ice creams that I've been focusing on is that the back of each container contains some cross-selling to other Private Selection products.  All of them state that I should pair this with some Private Selection coffee and after continually reading that and shaking my head, I finally found a flavor that the coffee pairing would make sense with in this pint of Private Selection Sweet Honey Baklava Ice Cream.  Modeled after the Greek pastry treat, this pint set me back (I use that phrase very loosely) $0.99 in a mega sale event.  As per usual, each pint is four half-cup servings and each serving comes in at 220 calories.

Being that it is modeled after the Greek pastry treat, it should come as no surprise that there were some baklava pastry pieces spread throughout the pint of ice cream.  Also spread throughout the pint of ice cream was a honey ice cream base flavor.  Also within that mix were small walnut pieces and a very pungent smelling honey sauce.  With the walnut pieces included, the honey sauce was surprisingly grainy and did not have the smooth, yet gooey, texture that I'd customarily expect from a sauce in the middle of a pint of this gourmet ice cream.

In terms of flavor, I can only think of one word to describe this:  different.  The honey flavor was obviously present in both the ice cream itself and also in the grainy honey sauce.  Its flavor alternated between sweet (not surprising) and tang (surprising), so I wasn't quite sure what to think of this.  As expected, the walnut pieces added crunch, but no real flavor since walnuts are such a neutral flavored nut.  The baklava pieces added another textural component due to the fact that they were handsomely sized in addition to their chewiness.  They didn't have a lot of flavor since it was just a basic flaky pastry crust, but that was okay because their textural difference was very welcome.  What wasn't welcome was the battle between sweet and tang that the honey sauce was fighting against itself.  Like I said, it was just different and that's really the only way I can think to describe it.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Being that this was different, it certainly provided me a unique experience.  What is odd is that I can't say whether I did or did not enjoy that experience.  Because I can't come to any sort of conclusion on where I liked this or not, I have to give it a FLY BY IT rating in terms of whether I'd purchase it again.  Maybe the unique flavor of this could find a winner with your taste buds, but my taste buds are just so confused by this that I'm not sure I want to try it again.  So weird.  I can honestly say that I've never been stumped by a product like this in the blog's history and I'm actually kind of upset by it because I feel like I'm cheating myself and anyone else that bothered to read to the end of this odd review.
