I mentioned in my last Green Giant review that I had the freaking brand theme song locked in my head. Fortunately, I've managed to shake that and because it's not rocking my head and driving me crazy anymore, I figured now was as good of a time as any to look at one of Green Giant's original chip flavors with this bag of Green Giant Zesty Cheddar Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips that I picked up on sale at Marsh for the low, low price of $1.00. Each bag is 5.0 ounces and has five servings per bag. For those of you keeping score at home, one serving is about ten chips and each of those servings is a 140 calories.
So, when you take a look at these in the picture above, what's your first thought? Mine was Nacho Cheese Doritos and I'm guessing that yours probably was too. These things were pretty much doppelgangers for Doritos based on the shape, smell and feel. They had that cheddar dusting on the tortilla chips and also had that cheddar smell, just like the Doritos chips. The only difference and it was a minor one at that, was that these seemed to be more of a burnt orange in color as opposed to the neon orange of Doritos chips.
The Doritos comparison doesn't really stop with the look either because I honestly can't think of any other way to describe these. These were pretty much the exact same thing as the Nacho Cheese Doritos with a very, very slight exception and that comes from the part of this product name that had "Zesty" in it. These chips had a bit of a bite at the back end of the chip, whereas Nacho Cheese Doritos do not typically have that. I would guess that additional kick comes from the fact that these chips are made of roasted veggies and also include a bit of garlic in them, but I cannot say for certain. One thing I can say for certain though, is that they did have a bit of zest in them and that was a good way for them to differentiate themselves from Doritos.
Buy It or Fly By It? Obviously I'm beating a dead horse here by continuing to bring up Doritos, but I can't think of any other way to describe these or anything else to compare them to. I'm not sure if that's because I lack creativity or the similarities are just so strong that there is nothing else to do, but anyway that I look at it, I have to give these a BUY IT rating. Nacho Cheese Doritos or not, these were a good chip offering by the Green Giant and make for an excellent little snack if you want a little zest in your life. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Also, in case you were wondering, these are the same caloric load as the oft-mentioned Doritos, so I guess the "healthy" part of these comes from the fact that the product name has "Veggie" in it. I can't think of any other thing that might make this healthier, unless there are less chemicals, but being that I'm not a food scientist, I'll just stick to the name being the only reason.
