Review: Haagen-Dazs Stracciatella Gelato

Haagen-Dazs week continues with another review to add to the collection.  I'll be the first to admit that prior to seeing news of this gelato on the internet, I had never heard of Stracciatella in my life.  Based on the news of this new flavor introduction, my quest to try new things and ultimately also by the fact that I want more pageviews for the blog (read:  more income), I picked up this fourteen ounce container of Haagen-Dazs Stracciatella Gelato at Kroger on sale for $2.49.  Each container has 3.5 half-cup sized servings and each serving is a fairly robust 270 calories.

Being that I had no idea what Stracciatella was coming into this review, I'll just let Haagen-Dazs describe what this container of gelato is:  "inspired by the Italian classic, our stracciatella gelato folds rich chocolaty shavings into smooth, sweet cream gelato."  So there you have it.  Rich chocolaty shavings and sweet cream gelato.  As you can see from my picture above, Haagen-Dazs was certainly not shy with the amount of chocolate shavings that they threw into this and I certainly appreciated that.  The sweet cream gelato itself was an off-white color and definitely had that creamy smell, if you know what I mean.

So, how did it taste?  Well, it tasted almost exactly like the description said it was.  The chocolaty shavings melted almost instantaneously upon entrance into my mouth due to their thinness, so they brought no crunch, but that was perfectly fine.  As for their flavor, it was definitely rich as advertised and had while not overly sweet, that it did bring a hint of sweetness to the dense richness of the chocolate.  The sweet cream ice cream is where the sweetness in this container came from and that was to be expected based on the name (DUH!).  It was fluffy and extremely smooth and when mixed with the chocolate shavings, it made for a delectable combination.  Oddly, as I spooned my way through this, I was reminded of one of my beloved Boston Cream donuts, although obviously minus the donut part of the equation.  If something in frozen gelato form can remind me of one of my favorite treats (and also my will power nemesis), it definitely has a leg up in my book.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This was pretty basic as it was just chocolate and sweet cream gelato, but the fact that this was basic does not deter from what was an outstanding container of gelato.  Frankly, I found this to be delicious and for that, it clearly gets a BUY IT rating.  The smoothness of this gelato makes for an excellent change of pace with typical ice cream and I find myself enjoying gelato more and more with each passing day.  Efforts like this may cause me to reach more for gelato than I do for ice cream in the future and I thought I'd never be able to say that.

BUY IT!!

  1. For 2.49 that's a steal! Here in Canada it's 6.99 a small tub (500ml). My tub was actually pure white, no off white colour. I actually found this gelato to be too overly sweet. I was expecting a light sweetness from the gelato, perhaps too much chocolate shavings... or maybe their sweet cream gelato is just too sweet for my taste. I bought this flavour as I absolutely love Lindt's chocolate ball stracciatella flavour (light blue), it is amazing and I thought this gelato would similarly be as amazing.
