Review: Kellogg's Special K Sweet & Salty Popcorn Chips

A while back during Special K week, I had a request from a reader to review a Special K product that I had not done yet and frankly, the thought of it bored me.  But, I do like to fulfill requests from my loyal readers, so that leads me to this review of the Kellogg's Special K Sweet & Salty Popcorn Chips.  I picked up a box of these at Kroger for $2.49 and the first thing of note is that this box contains more product than the cracker chip boxes as it contains 4.5 ounces of Popcorn Chips as opposed to the 3.5 in the other flavors.  Since this is a bigger box, there are more servings in this box at 4.5 and each serving is 120 calories.  For reference, a serving size is about 28 chips.

After I tore open the seemingly space age foil freshness wrap, my first observations were that this smelled just like popcorn and looked just like a tortilla chip.  Neither of those should be surprising since popcorn is in the name of the product and a visual representation of the chips is on the front of the box.  Still, you just never know and at least the fact that Special K followed through on those seemingly basic requirements is a good thing.  Another observation that I had was that these chips were particularly slick when I grabbed them and I guess that you could surmise that the slippery texture could be an approximation of butter on popcorn. Okay, I'll go with it.  There's not a lot of other things to cover about these, so I'll dive right into the flavor.

What I expected prior to putting these into one of my mouth was a salty mess.  The box said that these were sweet and salty, but all I expected was salt and no sweetness.  What I got was nearly the exact opposite and I was shocked by that.  To my taste buds, these chips were more sweet then salty and the sweetness of the chip almost had a caramel like flavor, which I'm guessing was a funny amalgamation of the corn flavor.  Being that I worship at the altar of caramel quite frequently, I thoroughly enjoyed that.  The chips themselves were crunchy like a typical tortilla chip and frankly, there was very little of the salty component promised on the box.  Being that I'm more of a sweet guy than a salty guy, I very much appreciated that.  What I called the buttery texture of these also helped lube these as it made them easier to chew and swallow since salty tortilla chips can sometimes be difficult to process, but these did not have these issues.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I'll fully admit that I was completely flabbergasted by not only these chips, but also by how much I liked them.  Like I said, they were more of a sweet treat than anything and I think that's why I liked them so much and give these a BUY IT rating.  Don't get me wrong, the salty component is still there, but it is just muted somewhat by what I deemed as the sweetness being the prevalent flavor.  I'm glad a reader asked that I review these because I probably would have stayed away forever and never been able to experience what is a quality and tasty product that could turn out to be borderline addicting if left unchecked.

BUY IT!!

  1. Thanks for reviewing these, you're the only review I found about them before I tore open the bag. The 'seemingly space age foil freshness wrap' was the only thing that disturbed me. It was SO THICK. I love popcorn Indiana chip'ins, They use less packaging material. These were yummy. But, They could afford to make a larger bag rather than box then thick bag... I agree though, saltiness is a turn off for me and these were perfect. salty, mostly sweet, not overly sweet. Yum. But note: Please recycle. The packaging is bad on this product.
