I've been known to complain a lot on this blog about product names and descriptions because they are either too cute and/or do not describe the product fully. I've done this in previous Blue Bell reviews and the reason I bring that up again today is because the name of the subject of today's review pretty much takes all of that complaining out of the equation because the name of this pint of Blue Bell Pecan Pralines 'n Cream Ice Cream pretty much says it all, so there's no reason to complain, even though the pint container does not contain a description of what is inside anywhere on the packaging. I guess it doesn't need it (FYI, the full product description is on the half gallon size container). Anyway, I picked this up at Meijer on sale for $1.67 and it is the typical four half-cup servings and is 180 calories per serving.
Short of the product name, which pretty much says it all, I'll go ahead and copy and paste the full Blue Bell description for my enjoyment: "A combination of praline sauce swirled into a creamy vanilla ice cream sprinkled with praline-coated pecans." As the picture above shows, I can confirm that all of those items were in there. The praline sauce contained a hint of brown sugar as you could both smell it and see it in the texture of the swirl (as well as read it on the ingredient list). Also within the pint was a decent amount of pecan pieces, although they weren't necessarily all that huge. Still, there were enough of them that I didn't feel like I was getting cheated. The vanilla ice cream was of course standard stuff, so moving on...
Like I said above, the brown sugar was certainly prevalent in the smell of the praline sauce and it was in the taste as well and being that I'm developing into a major brown sugar freak, I absolutely loved that. The sauce, while not particularly gooey, had enough of that texture to make it fairly decadent and it worked well with the basic vanilla ice cream. If this pint had just been the praline sauce and vanilla ice cream together, it would have made for a decent pint of ice cream, but the presence of the praline-coated peanuts pushed this one into the very good category as they brought additional sweet crunch to each spoonful where I encountered them. That said, I do have a gripe about those pecans and that is that I wish they had been bigger and I also wish there had been more of them. That's just a personal preference though as I prefer my ice creams to have huge and crunchy add-ins and I know that isn't necessarily the case for everyone else.
Buy It or Fly By It? This pint is firmly in the BUY IT category and is one of the better Blue Bell products that I've reviewed up to this point. The sweet molasses quality of the praline sauce and coated pecans made this a winner in my mind and the added crunch, albeit minimal, made me truly appreciate and enjoy this pint. If those are the types of things that you look for you in your ice creams, I think you'll be pleased with this one.
