So here we go with my second NOW (No Opportunity Wasted) energy bar review. These bars are faced by Phil Keoghan, the host of CBS' Amazing Race, and are made with white chia seeds and New Zealand's own Manuka honey, which apparently is quite the bacteria fighter. Like the last review, I managed to get my hands on this NOW White Chocolate, Fruit & Nut Energy Bar via a free sample and it's just a sample size (read: tiny) representation of the bar, so the sizes and calories of this would not apply to what you'd find when purchasing this out in nature. With that said, this sample is 0.71 ounces and has 80 calories with three grams of protein.
If you can't tell from the sheen of this bar in the picture above or by the fact that this has honey as one of it's prominent ingredients, I'll go ahead and lay it out for you: this bar is quite sticky. It actually took a little bit of effort to separate the wrapper from the bar. That's not an issue, but just a funny thing. Anyway, outside of the stickiness (and honey smell), the rest of the bar included small bits of almonds, raisins, white chocolate and oats. After perusing the ingredient list, I learn that also in the rice crisp base mix of the bar was corn flakes! LOL. After laughing at the thought of the Kellogg's rooster co-habitating with this bar (I have an odd mind), I was ready to take a bite into the tiny square bar.
After taking my first bite, I was immediately upset that this was only a sample because this was flat-out delicious. The rice crisp and almonds added some nice crunch and the raisins mixed in with that to add some occasional softness to each chew. As for the flavor, the honey brought some nice sweetness to the bar and when mixed with the absolute decadence of the white chocolate and then the tang of the raisins, I was dealing with a sweet treat that I could not get enough of. It wasn't too sweet, but it was sweet enough that it was almost as if you were eating dessert and I was loving every single second of that.
Buy It or Fly By It? Absolutely BUY IT because this was freaking awesome. If I only had one suggestion to make this even more incredible, it would be to replace the almonds with macadamia nuts because to me, white chocolate and macadamia nuts are like peas and carrots (to quote Forrest Gump) and the go together perfectly. Even without that suggestion though, this was still incredibly delicious and I'm still upset that I only had a sample size to eat.
