Review: Walden Farms Original Barbecue Sauce

Sometimes I look at the amount of Walden Farms reviews that I've done on this site and start to feel good about myself thinking that I've knocked out a decent sized portion of their product catalog.  When I look at their actual website, I'm sadly mistaken because there are a ton of their products that I haven't reviewed yet and I've got a while to go and that leads me to my next review of their Original Barbecue Sauce.  I've done a previous review of their Thick 'N Spicy sauce on WouldIBuyItAgain.com before and liked it, so I was anxious to see if I'd have the same feelings about their Original sauce as I did about that one.  As with all their products, this one is calorie and sugar free.  I picked up a twelve ounce bottle of this at Kroger for $3.69.

You can't tell all that well from my picture, but there are actual pepper flakes in the sauce.  You'll just have to take my word for it on this one.  As for the rest of the sauce, it was definitely thicker than your typical Walden Farms sauce/dressing and being that most normal barbecue sauces are usually very thick, the fact that this sauce wasn't particularly runny was very nice.  It also smelled quite a bit like barbecue sauce, so they were definitely off to a good start on this.

When I polished off this spoonful so that I could taste it on its own and not have the taste clouded by any other food product, I've got to say that I was impressed.  This tastes very close to an actual barbecue sauce.  The taste they appear to be going for here is more of a traditional flavor that is not overly sweet like a Kansas City-style sauce and they've really nailed it with this.  Sure, it's a bit more runny than your typical sauce, but the flavor is right on as the pepper bits do add a slight kick to the sauce.  Another positive they have going here is that the acidic taste you normally get in Walden Farms products doesn't really play a major role here.  Sure, the taste is there, but it is at the very end of the flavor and is there in a minimal amount.  A lot of people, including me sometimes, have a problem with that acidic taste in some of their products, so when it is fairly muted like it is in this sauce, it is a welcome guest.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've got to say BUY IT on this one because this is a reasonable approximation of a traditional barbecue sauce. Sure, it's slightly runny, but who cares?  It tastes darn good in my opinion and for that alone, I'm more than willing to put up with something that is a little bit runny.  If you are willing to put up with that as well, I think you are really going to like this sauce.  Now that I've reviewed two Walden Farms barbecue sauces and like them both, I've got to find a way to get my hands on some of the others they have listed on their site!

BUY IT!!

  1. I have had this several ties and I think its very good. Additionally, it is real BBQ so I'm not sure why in the review you say it taste close to actual BBQ.

  2. Not impressed... lacking that "specialness" I look for in a barbecue sauce.
