Review: LUNA Caramel Nut Brownie Bar

Last I checked, I look like a man.  A somewhat diminutive man, but a man nonetheless.  Despite this fact, a sample lady at Kroger made a point to try to push this LUNA Caramel Nut Brownie bar (along with others) on me during a trip to her store and not paying attention to the label where it indicates these bars are for women, I bought her sales pitch hook, line and sinker.  So, despite the fact that I'm not a woman, I did make the purchase and don't want to waste money, so I'll review this and some other LUNA bar flavors that I picked up in the future.  This one was $0.99 and contains 180 calories and eight grams of protein.  FYI, LUNA bars are manufactured by CLIF, so they are all part of the same family and that means that the bars are mostly organic (this one was 70%) and are all natural products.

Opening this one up, my first thought was that this looked like a German Chocolate Cake and whenever you make something that visually looks like just about one of the most decadent treats that exists, you are off to a good start.  Upon closer inspection, I found a chocolate base layer topped with a chocolate brownie-like middle layer that was covered by a caramel "frosting" that was drizzled with chocolate squiggly lines.  As I've already said, I was definitely impressed with the visual appearance.  After breaking it in half, I was impressed with the textural composition as well.  This was not a rock solid bar as a lot of these "health" bars are and was actually more like a brownie that I could have expected.  It was like a stale brownie in that it was slightly crunchy, but it was like a brownie nonetheless.  FYI, the nut component of this bar is walnuts.

In terms of taste, this actually did taste like a somewhat crunchy brownie and that was delightful.  The chocolate base was a little flat, but when mixed with the crunchy brownie layer and then the sweet, but mild caramel frosting, it made a nice combination.  The walnuts, while not overly large, add a nice crunch to the brownie as well and I certainly appreciated that.  It doesn't taste like the German Chocolate Cake that I was hoping for, but it is a reasonable approximation of a brownie and that is never bad.

Buy It or Fly By It?  If you are a woman, which I am not, I would say to definitely BUY IT.  This is not the greatest bar in the world, but it is still pretty darn good.  It's so good that I might even put my macho male side aside every now and then and buy one of these, although I won't tell anyone.  LUNA even says in their FAQs that this is okay for men to eat, so there!  Still, let's keep this our little secret...

BUY IT!!

  3. I'm a guy as well and buy luna bars frequently to be honest. They just taste good and are way better for you than a candy bar of the same size.
