Review: Chobani flip Pumpkin Harvest Crisp Greek Yogurt

I believe that I've lamented on this blog about "Christmas Creep" before and perhaps even what I'm now going to dub as "Pumpkin Creep.".  Christmas Creep is when Christmas products start making it into the store WAY BEFORE Christmas.  Pumpkin-flavored products are starting to become that way too as some of them are starting to pop up before September 1st.  That's crazy to me.  Fall doesn't officially start until September 23rd.  I, like I'm sure a lot of people, don't really think about pumpkins until October due to Halloween.  Anyway, Chobani has joined this creep by rolling out a pumpkin themed Greek yogurt in a limited batch.  I got this container of  Chobani flip Pumpkin Harvest Crisp Greek Yogurt in early September, but I don't know how long it had been on the shelf before that.  I do know that this is the first time that I've noticed that their flip line of products has been shown as "flip" on the packaging, which is orange by the way to reflect pumpkin (Note:  upon perusal of prior Chobani reviews, I learned that this "flip" has been in effect for a bit and I'm just an unobservant moron).  I picked up this 5.3 ounce container at Meijer for $1.09 and packed within it's orangeness is 210 calories and 12 grams of all natural protein.

I'm in a hurry today (darn real job!), so I'll just "borrow" (I can use quotation marks too) straight from Chobani:  "Pumpkin Low-Fat Yogurt with Pie Crust Pieces, Glazed Pumpkin Seeds and Pecans."  You will note that the Greek yogurt has an orange hue to it and also some speckles of "spices" mixed within it.  In the mix-in portion, there's a plethora of ingredients and all are handsomely sized, which is quite nice.  The thick and creamy Greek yogurt also had a pumpkin pie-like smell, so from a presentation perspective, Chobani was all aces so far.

Taking my first spoonful of the Greek yogurt, it had a nice sweet pumpkin flavor with a hint of spice at the end.  It wasn't overly spicy and the pumpkin flavor, while strong, was actually quite tasty.  All in all, the yogurt was a winner.  I then tasted each of the mix-ins individually and the pie crust pieces and the pecans were nothing to write home about.  Nice, but that's really all their is to say.  Now, the glazed pumpkin seeds were something.  Salty and sweet, they were yummy.  If someone packaged this as a snack (and they probably have), I would eat just these.  The last step here was to mix everything together and once I dumped out the container, I found out this would be grainier than I expected because the pumpkin pie pieces kind of fell apart.  That was fine, but just unexpected.  Anyway, I took a spoonful and this was sweet with a little heat and pretty much was everything I'd want from a pumpkin pie in Greek yogurt form.  It did have that slight dryness of Greek yogurt, but there was nothing awful about that.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've got to admit, I liked this a lot.  Pumpkin Creep really bothers me (hello Dairy Queen and multiple beer manufacturers!), but if I have to live with pumpkin in my life a month early, I'd be happy to do it with this.  This gets a BUY IT rating and if you are a pumpkin person (I'm become less of one each year as I get more creeped out), then this is definitely a product that you'll want to give a shot.

BUY IT!!

Editor's Note:  Apparently "my" Pumpkin Creep idea isn't unique to me, nor was I first according to this post.  I looked this up AFTER I wrote my review.

  1. I tried this as well, I like it but I didn't love it. the yogurt was too sweet with the add ins, if the yogurt had less sugar then this would work. but for me....too sweet!
