As I mentioned in my last Quaker Chewy bar review, the Quaker machine always keeps on rolling with new Chewy bar flavors. Today's review is the other flavor that I picked up on a recent trip to Meijer that was tagged as a new flavor. Loving Chewy bars and loving new flavors, I giddily grabbed this box of eight Quaker Chewy Caramel Apple Granola Bars off the shelf for the lovely sale price of $1.67. Each bar in the box is 0.84 ounces and comes in at the low end of calorie counts (for Chewy bars) at 90 calories bar.
Most Quaker Chewy bars are just standard Quaker granola bars with some mix-ins in the granola composition. With these two most recent bars, they've "fancied" them up a bit by adding a swirl on top of the standard granola. In the case of this bar, the standard granola is infused with bits of dried apple that carried a strong, but not off-putting apple smell. The bar is then topped with a decorative caramel swirl in Quaker's attempt to make this like the fall/carnival treat. The caramel had a mild smell of caramel, but it was hard to detect as the strong apple smell from the bar itself overtook that.
I will come out and say that I ate two of these before writing this review because my first experience was not one that I was sure was accurate and something that I wanted to write about. The first bar that I ate had an apple flavor that was extremely potent and the caramel provided a somewhat bitter aftertaste. Maybe that was because I had eaten something bitter before that, so I then took a drink of water to clean out my mouth and had another one of these and what I got was a flavor that had a lot of tartness from the apples, but it wasn't so much that I was turned off. The caramel then melted over the apple-flavored granola to provide a degree of decadence and sweetness to the entire package that made this appealing. To say that this was an entirely different experience than my first bar would be an understatement.
Buy It or Fly By It? I'm glad I ate two of these before I wrote this review or else this review would have turned out to be a disaster. I will admit that this wasn't my favorite of all the Quaker Chewy flavors because I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor combination itself, but in terms of actual flavor, this one was good enough to give a BUY IT rating. If you really like that caramel apple flavor combination, I think this one will be right up your alley.
