Review: Dr. Black's Brain Bar Dark Chocolatey Nut Bar

After my last Dr. Black's review, the people from Dr. Black's were kind enough to reach out to me to thank me for the review and also to apologize for the fact that my free sample melted before it arrived (totally unnecessary apology, but very much appreciated).  Because of that, they wanted to see if I would be interested in samples of their other flavor bar and that leads to today's review of this Dr. Black's Brain Bar Dark Chocolatey Nut Bar.  This one is 0.99 ounces and clocks in with 110 calories and four grams of protein.

As you can see from the picture above, the Indiana summer was once again unkind to these bars, despite the fact that the kind folks at Dr. Black's packaged this with a cooler pack and also special packaging in order to try to prevent this from melting during shipment again.  Oh well, it isn't pretty, but the flavor is truly what matters.  Anyway, the bar itself is a base of dark chocolate topped with a layer of rolled oats, almonds, peanuts, pretzel bits and of course Dr. Black's special brain blend.  On top of that is what is supposed to be a decorative swirl of dark chocolate.  In terms of smell, this one had a nice smell chocolatey smell coming from it, which was nice considering this was dark chocolate and dark chocolate doesn't often have any sort of smell.

I expected this one to just crumble when I bit into it, but it was actually very chewy with some occasional grainy crunch provided by the almonds, peanuts and pretzel bits.  It also had a strong almond flavor and I certainly wasn't expecting that.  In fact, the almond flavor was so strong that I'm not sure that I could taste any peanut flavor at all.  While the chocolate may have smelled nice, all it really did for this bar was melt because it didn't add a lot of flavor.  As for the conglomeration of flavors, there was a lot of almond, but there was just something off about how all the flavors work together.  I can't put my finger on it, but it just wasn't right.

Buy It or Fly By It?  It pains me to do this after the Dr. Black's people were so kind to me by sending me these free samples, but I have to give this one a FLY BY IT rating.  Something about these flavors just didn't work for me.  They may work for others, but I unfortunately just can't get on board, no matter how smart this brain bar makes me after eating it.

FLY BY IT!!
