Review: Fiber One 90 Calorie Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar

Since Fiber One products have been the subject at some crazy sales at my local grocery stores lately, I've been picking up a box at just about every store on every visit when I see a different flavor and that's led to a lot of reviews.  It was on a recent trip to Kroger that I picked up a box of five of these Fiber One 90 Calorie Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars on sale for $2.49.  Chocolate and peanut butter is kind of a boring combination, but a good one and since I want to review as many products as possible, it's only fitting that I nail these too.  Each of these bars comes in at 0.82 ounces and has 90 calories (obviously) and one gram of protein.

As usual, Fiber One does not really make how these bars look a mystery.  This bar has a peanut butter base topped with an oat and puffed wheat cereal mix on top.  Within that mix are honey, chocolate chunks and also peanuts, although I couldn't see the peanuts myself...they were listed in the ingredient list though.  Also, that mix contains cocoa powder which adds to the brownish/chocolate coloring.  These are also chewy bars, so as with the others, they are very soft and break apart quite easily with no snap whatsoever.  The bar is then topped with more peanut butter in the form of decorative icing, so that's pretty.  Whatever.

When I took my first bite, the first and just about only thing I tasted was peanut butter.  What was strange about this peanut butter is that it didn't really taste like peanut butter at all.  It wasn't sweet and it didn't have the hearty/dense flavor that peanut butter sometimes has either.  If I had to compare it to something, I would say that it was almost caramel-like.  That caramel-like peanut butter was also quite salty tasting and brought something to the bar that I wasn't expecting at all.  As for the chocolate flavoring, well, I guess it was in the bar, but I didn't taste it until the aftertaste each time.  If chocolate is supposed to be one of the primary ingredients of your bar and according to the name, the lead ingredient, I'd think the flavor would be a little strong but it was not.  Kind of a misfire on Fiber One's part there.

Buy It or Fly By It?  At first I gave this a positive rating despite the fact that it had so many shortcomings but after giving this some more though, there's no way that I can recommend this to anyone and have to give it a FLY BY IT rating.  It's not a bad bar, nor is it a good one either.  It's just flat out boring.  That said, if you really, really, really want to get your chocolate peanut butter fix, I suppose you could try to fill that with this, although you'll probably still be left wanting more.

FLY BY IT!!
