Review: Yoplait Strawberry Greek Yogurt

I'm slowly but surely developing a taste for Greek yogurt.  It's odd and off-putting at first, but once you get used to the fact that it's going to be creamy and tart, it becomes just like any other food product in that you recognize how it's going to be and you just find the flavors that you like.  In that quest, I'm led to Yoplait's Strawberry Greek yogurt flavor.  It comes in a six ounce container packing a robust 160 calories, fourteen grams of protein and zero fat.  I picked this one up on sale at Meijer for $1.00.

When I first opened this, I was like "what the heck, this is just white yogurt...where are the strawberries?!"  Once my brain actually started to function and I stirred this up a bit, I was pleasantly surprised to find an ample reservoir of strawberry bits and a strawberry jam-like concoction at the bottom of the yogurt cup.  You'd think I would have recognized that it clearly says "Fruit on the Bottom" on the container, but as any regular reader already knows, I'm no Norman Einstein (that's for all you Joe Theisman fans/haters out there).  Anyway, the strawberry chunks are roughly the size of a BB pellet and there are more than enough of them to spread throughout the yogurt cup.  As expected since it's Greek yogurt, the texture of the yogurt itself was thick, creamy and heavy.

In terms of taste, I can honestly say that this was delightful.  I try not to expect out of things that have such basic flavors as strawberry, but this one was actually quite delicious.  The sweet taste of the strawberry chunks and jam-like mix were the perfect complement to the creamy and slightly tart taste of the Greek yogurt.  One thing I have found about these Yoplait products in my reviews is that there Greek yogurt taste is more mild than Chobani, for example, and that's something that I really enjoy.  Being that I am a big sweets guy and the strawberry sweetness was plentiful in this entire cup, this was a winner.

Buy It or Fly By It?  BUY IT.  This is a great starter flavor for someone looking to try Greek yogurt because it is so basic and tasty.  Even if you've had plenty of Greek yogurt in your life, the flavor of this one is solid enough to be appetizing to those experienced eaters.  Plus, with the protein punch and its zero fat composition, you are a winner on the health front too and that is never a bad thing.

BUY IT!!

    1. Yeah, all of these Greek yogurts can get kind of expensive, especially Chobani. That's why I only buy them when they are on sale for $1.00 or I have a coupon that makes the price hurt my wallet a bit less ($1.25 or less). That said, I do find the Chobani to be pretty good, although I'm getting to be a big fan of Dannon Oikos (another review on that coming Monday).

Thanks for the comment, by the way!

    1. I don't believe there are any Safeway stores in my area, so unfortunately, this is not one that I'll ever be able to try. Too bad, because I'd like to give it a shot based on your recommendation.

      Thanks for the comment though!
