Review: Quaker Popped Chocolate Rice Snacks

Editor's Note:  While the product has stayed the same, Quaker now markets these under a different named and they are now called "Quaker Popped Rice Snacks." The review below applies the same.

I realize that I have already done a Quakes review and there are more on the way.  The good news is that unless Quaker introduces a million new flavors, I'll eventually run out of flavors to review and these reviews will go way.  Hopefully people do not get sick of the site before then.  That said, next in line are the Chocolate Quakes.  At 120 calories per serving (about three per bag), it's not the healthiest thing in the world, but hey, it's better than Doritos.  These were purchased on sale at Meijer for $1.00.

Consistency-wise, these aren't a lot different than a lot of the Quakes line.  These have a hard exterior and are covered by a chocolate-y, shiny coating.  The hardness contributes to an increased weight/density which leads to these being quite crunchy.

Also like the majority of the Quakes line, this one depends on what kind of covering you get on your individual Quake.  The Quakes that are well covered has a mild chocolate flavoring, although the chocolate does not really have a "natural" chocolate taste.  Frankly, you can tell it is heavily manufactured.  On those Quakes that are not well covered, you are getting pretty much a bland rice snack and that is not appetizing.  The inconsistency of covering really kills these Chocolate Quakes more than the other Quakes because the chocolate flavoring is not all that great on these.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I would say to FLY BY IT, especially when these are at regular price (can be upwards of $2.00 per bag).  The chocolate flavoring is too weak to make these memorable or a nice snack.  That said, if you are a chocolate freak, want variety to your Quake purchase and they are on sale for $1.00, I could see an argument (a weak one) being made to purchase these.  Still, as a general rule of thumb, stay away from these as they are definitely one of the weaker Quakes efforts.

FLY BY IT!!
