Review: LUNA Chocolate Cupcake Bar

LUNA products were something that I reviewed frequently in the early days of the blog as they were easy to get my hands on at the stores.  I reviewed them so frequently that I eventually ran out of flavors to look at unless they released a new flavor out into the stores that I had never seen.  Eventually I stopped looking at the LUNA section because it was the same sold stuff each time.  Anyway, on a recent trip to Kroger, I just happened to look at the LUNA section of the shelves and saw a newly released flavor and that leads to today's review of this LUNA Chocolate Cupcake Bar.  It's the first time in well over a year that I've looked at one of their bars and this gluten free bar cost me $1.00 and it weighs in at 1.69 ounces with 180 calories and nine grams of protein.

Taking this out of the wrapper, LUNA was definitely doing a solid job from a presentation perspective in trying to represent the cupcake motif with the "baked" portion making up the bulk of the bar and then the "icing" making up the coating on top of the bar, even with some additional decorative patterns.  As you'd expect, there was a lot of chocolate here and it smelled strongly of rich, sugary chocolate as soon as I took it out of the wrapper.  Within the bulk of the bar were some additional chocolate chips as well, so it was clear that there was definitely not a shortage of chocolate here, which is ALWAYS a good thing.

My first bite of this bar presented me with a bar that was slightly more tough than a brownie, but still soft in the grand scheme of things.  It also presented me with A LOT of chocolate, which I very much liked.  The interior/bulk of the bar was chewy and then the chips and icing just melted over the top of that to provide a gooey chocolate sensation.  It truly was a chocolate cupcake, albeit a slightly chewy one (think slightly stale).  Still, for a nutrition bar, this was a solid approximation.

Buy It or Fly By It?  A solid approximation of a chocolate cupcake and I'll go so far as to say that it was better than that, so it gets a strong BUY IT rating.  Certainly not a spectacular product that I'm going to go crazy over, but a very good one that I think any chocolate lover out there would very much enjoy.  If you are one of those people (like I am), grab this off the shelves and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

BUY IT!!
