Review: Quaker Chewy Birthday Cake Granola Bars

It must be new product season for Quaker Chewy bars.  Recently, I've noticed and reviewed several of their new Girl Scouts affiliated flavors, but today I'm going to be taking a look at a new product that is not really affiliated with anything except the anniversary of someone's birth and the dessert related to that.  Yep, it's a box of eight Quaker Chewy Birthday Cake Granola Bars that I stupidly paid the full price of $2.75 for at Marsh.  I say stupidly because they went on sale for $1.99 two days after I bought this box.  AARGH!  Anyway, each bar in the box clocks in at 0.84 ounces and has 100 calories.  Basically, it's a standard Quaker Chewy bar.

Some of these Chewy bars try to get real creative and mix things in with the granola or drape themselves in coating or whatever.  This bar mixed some white candy chips into the granola mix and then dumped a bunch of birthday cake ingredients on top.  Included in that, as you see above, are the multi-colored sprinkles and then that is all bound together with a white glaze, which I'd imagine is supposed to be like frosting.  Alrighty then.  I guess I could say the top of the bar was somewhat sticky, but outside of how it looked, I can't really think of anything else to say here.

When I bit into the bar, there really wasn't much to say either.  The granola was the standard Quaker Chewy granola.  Soft and wait for it...CHEWY.  The sprinkles and candy chips did add a bit of graininess to the granola texture and the glaze did make it a bit stickier.  In terms of flavor, none of them were particularly identifiable as individual components to me as it really just tasted like one big batch of really sweet sugar.  Basically like a white frosted birthday cake.  That's the name of the bar, so I guess they got what they were going for.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This did taste like a birthday cake, but it tasted like a boring birthday cake.  It wasn't addicting or particularly tasty,..it just existed.  That's not exactly a ringing endorsement and while there was nothing wrong with this, there wasn't enough right with it for me to actually recommend this to someone.  Just too boring, as I said, and that means a FLY BY IT rating.  Add in a bit more mix-ins or so something a little crazier with the mix-ins already there and you might have a winner here.  All this birthday cake made me want to do was leave the boring party.

FLY BY IT!!
