Review: Mediterra Yogurt & Oat Bar with Apricot & Pistachio

I'm trying to steadily plow through my last few purchases from my Fresh Thyme shopping splurge a while back and as I work my way though, I'll be hitting on another Mediterra review today.  I had some nice success with them in my first review, so I was anxious to dive into this Mediterra Yogurt & Oat Bar with Apricot & Pistachio that I picked up for $1.99.  The bar itself is 1.6 ounces, 180 calories and has seven grams of protein packed in.  It's all natural and gluten free, so it does have those healthy taglines slapped onto it as well.

Let's start from the bottom with this one.  It starts out with a base layer of yogurt, which as this blog has shown, is a staple of the Mediterranean area upon which this bar is based.  On top of that layer of yogurt is a mix of many ingredients.  Within that many ingredients are dried fruits like raisins and apricots, which are both clearly visible.  Also clearly visible are the sunflower seeds and ample soy crisps that are just everywhere.  There's also chunks of some of the named pistachios, but there's not really a ton of them.  That was semi-disappointing, but pistachios pack a lot of flavor typically, so I get why they wouldn't want to overpower this bar with that flavor.  The bar is then held together with various syrups and also honey.  What was interesting about this soft and pliable bar is that despite it having a whole bunch of ingredients, it didn't really smell of anything.  That was odd.

Biting into this, it was naturally chewy since it was soft and the presence of the dried raisins and apricots made that even chewier.  One thing they didn't do was bring a lot of sweetness because while their flavor was noticeable and was at the beginning of the bite, it wasn't overly sweet.  What was also not noticeable was the flavor of the yogurt because I really didn't taste that either.  That said, perhaps the pistachio flavor that came at the end of each bite was so strong (and it was salty) that it overpowered anything that the dried fruits and yogurt tried to do.  To spin the tables a bit, perhaps the fruits and yogurt were taming the pistachio flavor.  Hmm...that's a mind bender.  As for the other ingredient that was in the bar (soy crisps), they brought a ton of airy crunch to the bar and that's not surprising at all since there were a ton of soy crisps.

Buy It or Fly By It?  There's a chance that this bar might not be for everyone because the salty flavor is quite strong.  That said, it wasn't too strong for me and I found this to be quite appetizing, so I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  There wasn't a ton of flavor here outside of the salty pistachios (it could stand a bit more sweetness), but it was still a tasty bar overall and that's why I think this Mediterranean experience is an experience worth having.

BUY IT!!
