Review: CLIF Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Trail Mix Bar

I went into my local Kroger and while going through the nutrition bar aisle and looking for new products, I noticed what I thought was a whole bunch of new products from CLIF so I snatched up several of them.  When I got home, something about the flavor names seemed strangely familiar to me, so upon doing some research on the blog of old reviews, I was able to discern that CLIF has changed the Mojo product line to just CLIF Organic.  Since I looked at a large variety of Mojo flavors already, I found that most of the bars that I bought were duplicates.  Fortunately, not all was lost though and this CLIF Organic Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Trail Mix Bar is a flavor I hadn't previously reviewed, so here we are today.  This non-duplicate set me back $1.00 (sale price) and it comes in at 1.4 ounces with 200 calories and six grams of protein.

As you can see above, there's a fair amount of activity going on in this bar and that's even after I broke this in half and a couple of the dark chocolate chunks fell onto the floor and were thus not in the picture.  In addition to a solid amount of dark chocolate chunks, the bar had a dark chocolate base coating and within the bar, there were tons of huge, strongly smelling peanuts.  With those peanuts were another nuts and that was a whole bunch of large almonds as well.  In terms of dark chocolate and nut representation, this was a winner.  The bar also contained the classic rice crisps and was bound together by syrups and peanut butter.

I will say that biting into this was a lot more difficult than I could have imagined because it was quite hard.  Also, another note about this bar is that there was nothing chewy about it at all.  This was all crunch from the nuts and crisps.  The dark chocolate chunks were also crunchy, although they melted over the rest of the solids pretty quickly, as did the dark chocolate base.  In terms of flavor, this was all peanut flavor as I would have expected from the smell.  It was sweet peanut butter and I liked that, but the sweetness was quickly tamed by the bitterness of the dark chocolate which kind of lingered after each bite.  So, the named flavors represented themselves strongly and I guess that's all you can hope for.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I'm not a huge dark chocolate guy and I can only take it in small doses.  This bar had too much dark chocolate and it tamed the sweet peanut butter way too much for my liking, so I have to give this a FLY BY IT rating.  That's not to say this is a bad bar, it's just not my thing.  For those of you out there that like dark chocolate, which I know there are many, you'll probably love this bar and should not hesitate to pick it up.  If you aren't a dark chocolate person like me, you should probably stay away.

FLY BY IT!!
