Review: belVita Soft Baked Oats & Chocolate Breakfast Biscuits

I wish I had done a better job of categorizing Free Friday Download posts because it seems like the Kroger promotion is starting to account for a fair amount of reviews.  Today's review is another one of those instances as a recent coupon promotion allowed me to pick up a box of these belVita Soft Baked Oats & Chocolate Breakfast Biscuits at of course no cost to me to add to my modest belVita collection.  Within each box are five soft baked biscuits and each biscuit clocks in at 1.76 ounces and has 200 calories and 3 grams of protein, in addition to some "Nutritious Morning Energy."

After taking this out of the wrapper, it was clear that these were soft baked as breaking this apart for the picture above may have been the easiest task I've completed in my lifetime.  It had the texture of a soft baked cookie and anything that reminds me of a soft baked cookie, especially a chocolate chip one earns points in my book.  Being that this was 1.76 ounces, it was a bulky biscuit and it had the typical oval shape of a belVita product.  Within the soft baked biscuit was a healthy dose of dried oats and also a healthy scattering of fairly large-sized chocolate chips.  Again, this biscuit reminded me of a cookie and that is never a bad thing.

As I certainly would have expected, this was quite soft when I bit into it.  What I didn't expect was how dry it would be, but had I actually given it a bit of thought, that should not have really surprised me as a large portion of the bar is made up of dried oat pieces.  What also surprised me, in a positive way, was the taste of the chocolate chips.  They were well spread and had great and almost decadent chocolate flavor.  I say almost because they were only semi-sweet chocolate, but nonetheless, that chocolate melting over the dry oats and fibrous part of the bar was not only welcome from a flavor perspective, but also from a texture perspective as the melting and subsequently gooey chocolate did a nice job moistening up this entire bar.  If I had to equate this to something, I would say that it was a bulky chocolate chip cookie that tended to be on the dry side.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Dry or not, anything that reminds me of a chocolate chip cookie is something that is near and dear to me, so this gets a BUY IT rating.  While not outstanding and just barely standing on the fringe of being too dry, this belVita "biscuit" is a nice little snack or a way to start the day while also reminding yourself of dessert.  Breakfast dishes are like that a lot (French Toast, etc.), so it should come as no surprise that this is along the same lines.

BUY IT!!
