Review: Dannon Oikos Traditional Apple Pie Greek Yogurt

So I think we can all agree that if there is a dessert that is closely tied with America, it is Apple Pie.  With that, looking at today's review source is moderately amusing to me.  It's a classic American dessert matched with a Greek yogurt manufactured by a French company.  Huh?  Well, I suppose it can be said that this is the United Nations of products.  Anyway, today is another Dannon review as I take a look at this multi-cultural single serving cup of Dannon Oikos Traditional Apple Pie Greek Yogurt that I picked up at Kroger for $1.00.  It's 5.3 ounces and within that is 170 calories and eleven grams of protein.  What is also interesting about this is that the labeling specifically says "With Room For Toppings", so Dannon is definitely encouraging people to doctor this one.  I'm not sure whether that is a good or bad sign.

Being that this is a review blog of the product itself and not a doctored version of a product, it's probably best for me to eat the "naked" version of the product as it was delivered to me.  What was delivered to me was an extremely thick Greek yogurt that had tan color with little bits of cinnamon visible throughout the yogurt mix (so little that they aren't really visible in my photo above).  It smelled faintly of both apples and cinnamon, but outside of that, this was just a very plain presentation.

As I took my first spoonful, the first thing I noticed wasn't the flavor.  It was how extremely thick this was.  I had no feelings either way on whether this was good or bad, but I'm not accustomed to yogurts, Greek or otherwise, that are as thick as this one.  I guess I should point out that since I noticed the thickness first, that's not exactly a compliment to the power of the flavor.  All I can say about this is that it did have some flavor as I could taste both the apples and the cinnamon, but both flavors were very mild.  I mean, I guess it did somewhat resemble an apple pie, but I had to strain to get that flavor.  That said, that doesn't mean that this was bad...it just wasn't strong flavor.  It was a reasonable enough approximation of the namesake to make it worthwhile.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I would have liked this to have stronger flavor, but even with its mild flavor, it was still good enough to get a BUY IT rating.  I will point out that the suggestion of adding toppings in (like some sort of crusty thing to resemble the actual pie crust in an apple pie) is advice that should probably be heeded as those additional toppings will bring this some more flavor that it probably needs.

BUY IT!!

  2. The Yoplait Greek Yogurt Apple Pie is very good. I don't even like yogurt and I ate it with no complaints whatsoever.
